But you are still banned for whatever time, which is honestly worse than having 2 or 3 points since they don't ususally put restrictions on till 10 or so IIRC

My "first offense" was me talking about illegal things, the second time when I got the warning was when I told someone to install Linux which was considered unhelpful/trolling.

If OP was dead set on something, and you only suggested something completely different, it can easily be argued as both.

thats my point though.

 

lets say i post and say.  "I have trouble using X program to do Y, i need help"

and someone, with more experience than me says "well that program can do that, but its a PITA, you should use Y, it will work much better for you"

 

if I then report them for trolling.... that doesnt seem right.... you cant force people to pander to close mindedness.  If all you wanted was to have a circlejerk about how your opinion and ideas are the best and dont want to accept constructive input.... why did you post on a public forum asking for help from people whose opinions may be different than yours?

 

isnt the whole point to have a discussion, and you cant do that if everyone comes in and goes "yup, me too"

If you're addressing the initial issue, such as product/software X is bad, then you're not just going to the suggestion of what OP doesn't want. You've made a justification.

 

Whereas the scenario EPENEX described is more likely going for the suggestion without a justification. Much like how people can ask for help buying a complete system, stating they don't want to DIY it, just to get 13 people just saying "build it yourself."

This whole thing depends on the context.

On one hand @Drak3 is right, but on the other hand @MedievalMatt is right.

Knowing the actual situation is important, if the OP explicitly said they don't want to use another OS, then telling them to install Linux, for example, wouldn't be a welcome reply.

However, if the OP didn't say that or maybe said that they have little to no experience with the problem they're posting about, then telling them to install/use a different OS might be considered as advice or a suggestion.

Warnings are listed on your profile forever, but older warnings are largely ignored. This is a limitation of the forum software, but I don't know that I would change it if I could - sometimes we need to refer to older warnings for various reasons.

You can now use the Contact Us link in the footer to contact staff, even if you have been suspended or banned, and we are able to accept ban appeals through there.
