Will I get disappointed if I pick the 2080 FE over Gigabyte?

Serban Ungureanu

Hey guys!

I have to decide between picking the 2080 FE or the Gaming one from Gigabyte (mainly because of my case size/price and design). At the moment, the price for the FE is £750 , while Gigabyte would cost me £800 +/- 10£. While this difference is not huge, I still consider it and I heard that the Gigabyte one is just a bit better than the FE in terms of cooling. Do you think that buying the NVidia one will be a decision that I will regret?

Thank you ^_^ !

FE one has a noticeably weaker cooler (Hardware Unboxed did a video between these two I think) than the Gigabyte, O'd say it's worth spending more.

you're already spending an absurd amount of money on an overpriced card so why not spend 6% more and at least get something great in terms of noise and cooling.

There's literally no good reason to go for an FE card . They run hotter and louder , plus they cost more than aftermarket cards.

Granted , i've always been partial to aesthetics on these reference coolers , dating back to the gtx 690 , but that's the only thing i can even really think of.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Since you've already decided to spend a lot more than a comparable card (1080Ti), the upcharge for the Gigabyte isn't that much at all. Get the better card.

Thank you all guys for your answers! I think I may go for the Gigabyte card!

@i_build_nanosuits I think you are a bit harsh on this one. 99% of the reviews on this card are completely forgetting about the 3D artists and only consider the gamers. Well, the things are a bit different when you render with this GPUs. I will explain my thought process behind the decision of buying an RTX.

The RT cores speed up quite a lot the light transport in the raytracing process, and some of the rendering engines will support this technology in 3-6 months ( that's what I saw, at least). At the moment, there are a few Octane renderer reviews that enabled RT cores, and without any optimization, they managed to score good improvements with the 20xx cards. Also, there are V-Ray developers that recommended me buying this card over the 1080ti. You can find an article about this here:

https://www.chaosgroup.com/blog/what-does-the-new-nvidia-rtx-hardware-mean-for-ray-tracing-gpu-rendering-v-ray

Also, as I am interested in GPU rendering, why wouldn't I go with a GPU that can stack the memory through NVLink and allow me some room for another card in the future (taking into consideration the importance of VRAM in GPU rendering)?

I think that if you want to buy a card and be future-proof, at least for rendering, the price difference is going to be worth it.

Call someone out when you've expressly said your use-case in the OP, not after.  Besides, you specifically mention the "Gaming one" from Gigabyte.  Why would we not think gaming focused?

Gigabyte all the way.  It's made to overclock.  FE has one fan it is made to run at stock.  If your not going to OC then I would get the FE, If you want to OC get the Gigabyte.  It's that simple.

One thing I noticed upon buying my 2080 Founders Edition is that the fans don't stay off until a specific temperature is reached; they don't drop below 41% and can't be manually set below that, either (according to EVGA Precision X1).

My Zotac GeForce 1080 Amp Extreme's fans didn't kick in until the GPU core reached 60C.

I imagine a lot of the brands have a similar system. Helps keep your system quiet.

I'm running a FE2080 and my buds running a gigabyte. Rough first results, mine OC better... I have no issues with noise. and Both cards will cap around 85 C regardless of power limit's maxed out.

I’d take fe. Most cards look like crap. But that doesn’t bother most.

Gonna perform all the same once they are in a case. Everyone using stock profiles and letting them sit at 70c+.

That's why I picked a FE one. I intend on water cooling it later.

Why bother with the fancy air cooler when I'll just be taking it off in favor of water cooling?

I went for the Founders Edition card because I love the look over the AIB cards.

Also next year I'm thinking of putting in a full custom loop including the GPU so founders or AIB wont really make a difference to me.
