Canon To Announce New FF Mirrorless Camera

The camera is to be called the Canon EOS-R, and is Canon's first full frame mirrorless camera, following Sony and most recently Nikon's mirrorless camera system. Canon is slated for an announcement of something this September 5th, and this could be their big announcement.

 

Specifications of the camera is as follows:

 

30.3 MP full frame sensor

Dual pixel CMOS AF with 5,655 AF points covering 88% of the viewfinder

Will autofocus from -6EV to +18

ISO sensitivity 100 - 40000 (extended ISO: 50, 51200, 102400)

Shutter speed: 1/8000 to 30 seconds, bulb

Continuous shooting performance: Up to 8 frames per second (at servo AF: up to 5 frames / sec)

Buffer size of 34 RAW files, C-RAW 61, DP-RAW + C-RAW: 150

Will shoot 4k @ 30fps or  Full HD @ 60fps or HD @ 120fps. 4K is at 480MBps

Will have a mic jack AND a headphone jack

Will have a vari-angle flip out touch LCD screen along with a electronic viewfinder

Has WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity

Uses the Canon LP-E6N battery pack, 370 shots CIPA rating, 450 with power saving

Dustproof and drip-proof magnesium body

A battery grip, the BG-E22 is also mentioned in the documentation

Records to SD cards, no mention if it is dual slot

Size: 135.8 x 98.3 x 84.4 mm

Weight: 660 g (including battery / memory card) · 580 g (body only)

 

The Canon EOS-R also introduces a new lens mount; the RF mount. Expected to immediately launch with the camera are the following lenses:

Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro

Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

 

Other RF mount lenses being reported as coming soon are as follows:

Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM

Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM

 

 

The current crop of Canon EF mount lenses will also fit on the EOS R with a native adapter; strangely enough, there are 3 adapters being listed, with one being for sure a EF mount adapter. There is speculation that one adapter will accept drop in filters, and the other has some sort of control ring.

 

 

It is expected this is going to be a sub-$2000 camera...

 

If all of this is 100% verified (and the sources appear to be so), this is going to be a killer camera for the price, compared to the underwhelming Nikon launch earlier.

Serious? No mention of in-body stabilization, no mention of any eye-focus, 370 shots CIPA rating same as Nikon Z6, no mention of dual-card slots, 5fps with continuous AF.....I think the spec is really underwhelming.

-6EV though... this will be able to autofocus on bats at night with that AF performance.

 

It will have face detect per the spec sheet though, and with that Dual Pixel AF, the AF performance should be extremely good.

 

Also, the spec sheet indicates the camera will also do in camera charging; you could hook up a battery pack to it easily.

 

The specs seem to indicate this would be the perfect VLOG camera; flip out screen, headphone and mic jack, 4k at 30fps.

Apparently, the adapter will take Canon EF-S lenses as well... the spec sheet mentions a crop mode of 1.6x to accept EF-S lenses.

A mount change is almost a requirement if you're going mirrorless. Not to do so would put you at a major disadvantage for wider lenses. Besides, it is relatively easy to adapt DSLR lenses to a new mount, especially Canon since EF lenses are all electronic. Easy of course doesn't mean optimal. 

 

 

I haven't been active in photography for a while, but I still have all my EF era camera gear. I doubt a new body is going to get me back into it, but I'll keep watching with interest. It will be interesting to see how Canon (and Nikon) will do. Anyone who needed big sensor mirrorless would probably have already gone Sony. But CaNikon will probably have a better conversion rate of their DSLR users, if they can demonstrate a good advantage to keeping one brand.

If your business and reputation depends on it, redundancy out of the camera is important.

I hope the autofocus speed is better than the Sony's mirrorless option (Alpha 7 iii IIRC), because that camera is all but useless at getting anything moving towards you at any speed more than a crawl in focus.

Per Canon Rumors, Canon is slated to also announce the Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM lens as well, along with 2 long telephoto lenses.

EF-S didn't get all equivalent lenses that EF got. So in a similar way, is there "enough" on EF-M? As a kinda starter kit, and if you want more, that would previously be DSLR, and now that also opens the door to the new camera? Only downside I guess is I assume there wont be any compatibility between EF-M and RF.

The EF-M and RF disparity...

Thing is EF came first, and EF-S was a modification from there. With mirrorless we're going the other way around. EF-M came first, then RF. It's easy to stick a small sensor on a big mount, but not the other way. Has anyone tried to measure it, even using the images for reference? My guess is RF is a bigger diameter to allow the bigger sensor, and it is totally different from EF-M. In a quick image comparison, the internal metal bits within the mount are in different positions so, unless there is some backwards compatible magic going on, it isn't looking too good. Adapters are also probably out as I'd assume the registration distances will be too close to allow that, although it remains to be seen. There have been some very thin "without glass, infinity focus" F to EF adapters for example but that assumes we'll have at least that difference.

No-L for EF-M is likely the same as for EF-S. It isn't meant to be a high end system. There's not really anything stopping anyone from making high quality lenses for smaller sensors. Just comes down to cost and the potential market. Part of the argument about not making a high quality smaller image circle lens has been that the savings are often less than people think, and the existing large image circle lenses could be used equally.

 

Mirrorless has in part been sold as "smaller/lighter" than DSLR. If you put more design into smaller lenses, you lose some of that too.

Mount registration distance between EF-M and the RF mount is about 2mm, so no RF to EF-M adaptor possible.

Several years late just like Nikon.

 

I don't expect either the Nikon or this to be able to compete with mirrorless from Sony.

Especially since Sony traditionally has a lackluster lens selection, but compared to both Nikon and Canon doing brand new mounts, Sony has a MUCH more flushed out glass selection.

 

Glad I picked up an a7iii and didn't hang around for this kind of stuff.

To me, these late mirrorless arrivals illustrate the difference between traditionalist and modern Japanese companies.

 

Conventional Japanese companies are well-known for having long-term plans that may stretch out over one or two decades -- and while they'll certainly make adjustments, they tend to stick to those plans come hell or high water.  If they realize they need a change in direction, it may take them years to adapt.

 

Sony isn't really like that.  It not only leapt on mirrorless relatively quickly, it's been rapidly iterating and evolving ever since.  It's the Muhammad Ali of cameras -- it's moving too quickly for its opponents to hit.
