assume they know all the websites your going to, all the things your connected to.

If you don't want them to know, use a vpn.

Is there a free VPN you guys would recommend? Also how do I know if what I am doing is encrypted or not besides like the https stuff?

Private Internet Access is the one sponsoring LMG and they seem to like it. This is probably your #1 option if you don't go with Nord VPN.

Express VPN is okay.
Some people still use TunnelBear but LMG broke sponsorship as McAfee bought them. Idk why that was a problem though.

EDIT:
Those are paid because you have to pay for good service. You could use TOR as it's free but PIA and Nord VPN might have free trials.

Depends how the internet is delivered, a lot are just deals with ISPs and are not actually the college network in any way shape or form. If you're unlucky then the connection is on the college network which means everything will be logged, with some filtering also likely.

From my colleague's college experience they are almost logging anything in Regensburg, Germany.  Hell, they even block some porn sites xD

To be sure use Tor or a VPN. In regards to VPN keep in mind that even free offers want to make money. This is usually achieved by selling your data, so be careful with completely free VPNs...

No one is giving you something for free...

Tor is very slow. So there is nothing OP can do about it. :P Unless if he wants to create his own VPN
