Posted August 17, 2018 Why are we still using the ancient SMS/MMS protocols on mobiles? I'm tired of getting pics and videos from friends that are absolute potato in normal messaging apps. I don't want to use a different messaging app. that's just inconvenient. where is the replacement? Something that implemented as well as iMessage is on iPhones. But for everything. I guess it would hurt Apple a bit but who cares? It's been long enough... do we not deserve this by now? I hope I'm not the only one that finds it extremely frustrating. Posted August 17, 2018 SMS is still very much in use today, but not for communication between people. It's widely used for 2FA, automated systems for opening gates etc. There have been plenty of messaging apps over the years that can do what iMessage does. Whatsapp, Telegram, Hangouts, etc. those are replacements. There is no such thing as a unified app that combines all of them into one, though. Posted August 17, 2018 SMS doesn't send media, the max data size is too small. MMS is the media protocol though it's still fairly limited. Both of these use the telephone SS7 (which is very outdated at this point and really needs to be replaced) protocols to send their messages. iMessage, WhatsApp, etc. use TCP/IP protocols instead of the SS7 protocols to send messages which allows for messages to be split up into more packets to be sent. Posted August 17, 2018 SMS is massively used today, and it is growing with more and more companies setting up dual factor authentication and services using SMS. SMS protocol has evolved the years, passing from using legacy protocols like SS7 to now SMPP. The thing is that like anything in telecommunications, new standards comes out quickly, but implementation takes AGES. Look at 5G for example, beside China government investing massive amount of money just to say "Look how advanced we are!" , it is nearly non-existent on the global level. Heck even proper full speed LTE, is spotty (in coverage) at best. An example of this is rich text SMS. Yes you can put text in bold, italic, color your text, etc. RCS (Rich Communication Services) is its official name. Windows 10 Mobile is the first to support it. Android just got it VERY recently... I think your need Oreo update, but don't quote me on that, and I don't even know if it has full support or partial one. Apple doesn't support it yet. Then you need to have the carriers to support it... then you need Tier 1 providers to support it (those on the one inter-connecting mobile operators together locally or at a global scale (long distance/between countries)). Your grandma has one of those senior phones with massive buttons? SMS works. You have a weird embedded project and you want to send information from and to your device? SMS is an option! Some people don't have messenger or whatsapp or whatever but they do have a mobile phone, so you can either text them or call them which is plenty for them. If they want to ask you but don't really want to bother you, they send a text. If it's sort of urgent, they call you. That's all they need! If you want my attention, quote meh! But something to replace it that's crossplatform and made for the modern world (media and such) would be great. But again, in order for it to work, you need the majority of phones supports it, and you need carriers, and Tier 1 companies. But Google is not in hurry, favoring its message solutions, Apple has iMessage so they don't care, you have Windows 10 Mobile, but no one bought them, and now they are gone.. maybe Window 10 will get support for it for LTE equipped devices.. carriers aren't in hurry to update their infrastructure to support it beside it would cost more money, as messages would be larger as a result (now, SMS is limited to 140 characters, so messages are very small. You can jam in 160 characters if your phone decides to compress the message (GSM 7-bit pack), but if it sticks to Unicode, then it will be less. It would need to split your longer message into multiple fragments and send those as separate SMSs. So with RCS, you have more data, and you want a nice amount of text per message, so these messages will be larger. So basically... maybe in 5 to 10 years you'll enjoy it.
