Provided you avoid they shadier parts of the interweb and don't do stupid stuff like clicking on random links in e-mail from people you haven't heard of before the antivirus built into Windows 10 is perfectly adequate (It's what I use). If you want additional protection then Malwarebytes would be a good addition.

The main thing to remember is that no antivirus solution is perfect - all it takes is a bit of bad luck (or stupidity) and a zero day exploit and your AV software is unlikely to stop the malicious code. Pick whichever AV meets your needs in terms of cost, convenience and system impact (AV software can be a bit of drag on system resources if its not well written).

 

In addition to AV you should also look at backing up your data on a regular basis - get an external hard drive or two and set up a backup regime (there is backup software built into windows or other options). Provided your data is backed up and secure you've got a fall-back position if some malware does manage to get through whatever your using.

If you want to pay for one, I recommend Kaspersky. I used to use trend micro and loved it but it's been a while and I'm not sure how good they are these days. If you're looking for free, then I recommend using windows defender, and have a free scan like malwarebytes or spybot at the ready, as well as having a flash drive with some portable apps like hijack this or even the two scans mentioned earlier, so if a virus hits you, you can toss into safe mode, run some scans and get rid of it. Also get off the Porn sites and you should be decent

I used to run with Windows Defender + Malwarebytes. But now I just run with Windows Defender. I feel like over the years a lot of malware either pokes at running shady code from websites or by opening random attachments or files. I have extensions to block scripts for the former and well, I just don't do the latter.

 

As mentioned before, it's also important to make backups of your files. Preferably backups that aren't always accessible like in the cloud or on an external drive that you only power on to make backups. This reduces the effectiveness of ransomware.

If you dont want to pay for premium, you can use the permanent beta of anti exploit you get from their forum as well as the normal free version.

Use two factor authentication on all your accounts using separate devices. Like use the google authenticator app on your phone. Have the backup codes securely stored in a format that cant be tampered with like a DVD or write it down on paper and put them in a fireproof safe.

I second this.

 

Malwarebytes Premium is a godsend tbh. Automatic scans and great anti-exploit features are worth the price alone. Scans take no time at all when you only have SSDs in your system 

 

Multifactor authentication should honestly be strongly encouraged (if not required) for many services online. Online banking and shopping sites should require it outright. Having to enter in a code every time you log in is a small price to pay for the excellent security multifactor authentication provides. 

 

One more thing to add is uBlock Origin. Adblockers are necessary for your protection online, and it's too bad so many website hosts are too short sighted and focused on adsense profits to crack down on the intrusive or malware-plagued ads they allow. I only whitelist a site if I genuinely enjoy their content and they have unobtrusive static banner ads placed in the margins of the webpage.

 

I'm going to be hard pressed to sympathize with a webhost over 10-15 cents of lost ad revenue from one visit to read an article, no matter how much they whine and scream for me to whitelist. My security and privacy are more important.

Whatever security suite with a firewall.

Threats these days don't just come from good old Viruses that you install after downloading "Latest_Song.exe" because you were too dumb to check if it was a .mp3, but from whatever crap that comes from the internet when you're browsing the web or tries to "call home" before activating. As such having a firewall that catches these threats is better than having just a plain old anti virus. (And lets face it, Windows Firewall may as well not exist, it's barely functional, it's just there to annoy you once in a blue moon to ask if a software should be allowed to run, but even there it doesn't ask for everything)

 

Be it BitDefender, Kaspersky, AVG Internet Security, or whoever else, don't just get an anti-virus software, if you are going to only get that, you may as well stay with Windows Defender.

Comodo Firewall gives you pretty good sandboxed desktop, browsers gives you private mode. You can do (almost) everything that way without any harm. I supposed that even what you want.

To be honest, installing Firefox and the Ublock Origin-addon for it, and then browsing Pornhub in Firefox's private window, but not clicking any of the non-video links there, should be perfectly safe and get your rocks off well enough. For added security, you could add the NoScript-addon, too, and learn how to use it, but I don't think that's quite necessary on Pornhub. (Can't comment on any other sites, though, or how safe they are)
