I suspect that they'll overpriced but maybe less so than their other products. Excluding a charger however would be suicide. I don't think any phone manufacturer would go there.

Well.. It's Red so I wouldn't be that surprised if they didn't include it. But yeah it's very unlikely.

Well, the iPhone is, well, an iPhone. It has a beefy-as-heck SoC, a closed-doors platform and long software update timelines to its advantage.

 

But whoever buys an iPhone won't be buying a RED Hydrogen, and whoever buys a RED Hydrogen won't be buying an iPhone or may already have one but uses the RED as a secondary.

 

Yes, the last part might sound absurd, but if they can afford a RED camera in the first place, they would be able to afford a phone that in honesty, doesn't cost much more than a fully-loaded iPhone X.

Maybe not now but later. RED can get away with not including accessories because their camera ecosystem is developed. That's the reason why when you buy a new RED, you pay only for basic body with sensor - you can use most of what you bought with your very first camera because the system is modular.

Here is my view on this phone:

Its not meant for everyone. Its meant as more of an experiment of technology, something that can actually be different in an oversaturated market of phones that, quite frankly, all look alike.

The display is the main thing being marketed because its just a strange thing to have on a phone, and its quite interesting. I doubt that it's useful but its what most people want to cover in the media.

The Modularity is what people should be getting this phone for. It's not meant to be for the average Joe or someone who wants a status symbol, the modularity could take this phone to a whole new level.

The phone's construction makes it look like it's not supposed to have a case. I think the modularity is being taken to heart here to make sure that the phone can be for photographers and enthusiasts. The whole phone looks to be built around photography, not being a phone. I'm looking at it as a smart-camera instead of a smart-phone. Think about it; so much on this phone is similar to a camera instead of a phone. Why would they use a Snapdragon 835 if they were planning on making it a modern phone (although it would be nice to have an 845 for the image processing). It isn't meant to be a powerhouse phone or a iPhone X competitor, it's a photographer's experimental camera.

I think the device is quite ambitious, and takes a step away from conventional design of devices. Just my opinion though.

Who needs fancy graphics and high resolutions when you can get a 60 FPS frame rate on iGPUs?

I'm surprised they went to carriers - I thought they'd just sell directly, the niche is tiny.

 

That said, if the camera is traditional RED quality, I will probably pick up a few + big sensor + lens mount for travel videography. Will be very useful in places like North Korea or South Sudan where carrying in large amounts of camera equipment is not possible, and for sub $5k for everything you need it is an outright bargain. It might be too big and bulky and professional looking though for when I want to pass myself off as a tourist.

 

I don't get the 3D screen though - unless they mean for it to be used as a monitor for RED stereoscopic rigs on big films? Or is it a gimmick so that they can sell to the general public as well? Or is it actually a useful bit of tech? I'll reserve judgement.

If people put the effort in to researching a company, apple would struggle to sell new phones with the tactics theyve used. They would have money for years to come, so that will never be a worry for them.

I am tired of this Apple user stigma. If you do understand tech, there are some compelling reasons to buy an iPhone:

 

- Abundance of accessories (cases, skins etc, cables etc...) 

- Some apps like Snapchat just run better on iOS

- The Apple A11 is a beast. And the iPhone is very optimized to use it

- iPhones have an awesome resale value

- iPhones still get updates, even 4 years later

- iPhones don’t have to be expensive if you buy used/refurbished 

- iPhones are generally good phones, they may not have the best screens, cameras or speakers, but iPhones perform well in these categories. 

 

Aside from that, some exclusive Apple apps are simply awesome like iMessage and Apple Pay. But the same can be said on the Android side of things.

I see this phone and it reminds me a lot of the Essential PH-1. I expect a lukewarm response at launch because the price is too darn high! And you may as well buy the latest Samsung/Apple flagship instead. But the price should drop soon after, and it could be the best enthusiast phone for the money. Just wait and see.

There is a difference between disliking a company because of the perception of the brand and its users and disliking it because of its actions. Few companies can get away with telling people they're using their product wrong or bricking peoples devices because they didn't buy a new one instead of repairing it via a third party. Then there's the many cases of product failures that were widely reported and denied by Apple who only offered extended warranties years after consumers had purchased replacements. I hate being devils advocate here, but Apple is too big to get away with their anti-consumer shenanigans. They frequently got sued this year for batteries, faulty keyboards, non genuine screens, software updates etc... So the consumer ends up getting more from Apple than what Apple is willing to give. Comparatively, many Android phones offer less in terms of software updates and servicing. I mean the LG Nexus 4 was totally gimped from awful software updates only 2 years after launch. And the Google Pixel could be a similar story. But nobody cares about Nexus/Pixel phones so Google can get away with more shenanigans than Apple.
