They have never been solely responsible for creating any major product they have ever worked on, but you can't teach someone experience, the experience of making some of the most complex pieces of silicon in the world at their given times.

 

There are only a handful of people that have Raja's experience, there are only a handful of people that have Keller's experience.

 

With new IP and resources without limits, they possible can create things they weren't able to before. 

 

Keller left on his own accord.  His job was done he laid the foundation for Zen and that was it, he left around 2 years prior to Zen being released.  With validation time, he left 1 year before Zen was sent to mass production.

 

Raja didn't leave on his own accord like Keller did though, he was forced out. He made a power play to get RTG separated from the rest of AMD, by doing so I'm sure he pissed Lisa Su off, and the retribution when Vega came up short, he got the door.  Its more corporate politics than anything else.

 

Secondly what even points more to this, prior to Vega's release, if you look at Raja's presence in the press, it was more fan fare about products, after Vega's release, he didn't have much association with the press, and when he did, Financial analyst presentation, he was somber.

 

Keller is working in the SoC group so most likely AI chips is what he will be working on.

Eh if they were planning to that it would have made more sense to do so when AMD was still in the red, also they can't buy AMD they could however buy Radeon, maybe. Not that I think they would at this point.

Maybe Intel are serious about the mobile market and want to give Atom another go there.  Maybe they know something we don;t and know that they need someone like Keller to pull it off.

The platform will be supported for 4 years, but by the time you are ready to upgrade the choice will be between a brand new celeron or a 3 year old i series.

I love the speculation in this kinds of threads.. why is it that big of a surprise that Intel are hiring people with experience in what they do? Regardless of where they come from.

 

People are making it out as if Intel are going into AMD offices and stealing people. Jim wasn't even with AMD when Intel hired him. Maybe these people just wanted a change, happens all the time.

CPUs are designed by many, many people. Intel has over 100,000 employees. Obviously not all of them are working on processor architectures, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a task involving thousands of people to some degree.

People join/leave companies all the time, it's just that Jim is somewhat famous so he is the only being highlighted in the media. How many people can name even one person who worked on Sandy Bridge or which companies they are currently working for? I certainly can't. Yet people for some reason are super fascinated with one of the people who helped develop a processor back in the 90's.

 

Not trying to downplay Jim's achievements because I am sure he is a brilliant guy that has contributed a lot, but this idea that he is responsible for entire architectures, or that he is the only one in the industry that does these kinds of things is ridiculous. Intel has been making processors without Jim for almost 50 years. He is certainly not the only one in the industry designing processors.

Most of the reason IT stick with Intel has less do with marketing and more to do with the basic concept of "better the devil you know".  IF you go and swap out a server for an AMD unit and something goes wrong,  guess who's arse it is?  It's the arse of the person who signed off.  If it ain't broke don't fix it and don't risk something going wrong just to save a few quid in the process.  Depending on the company an hours downtime can be more than the premium for Intel.    So when nearly all your fleet and back end are already Intel, changing that brings with it risks.

Reminds me... I have noticed professionals, or people who learn how to use mildy complex software or hardware who talk about it as if they know what they are talking about. Atleast people ive met. But if you choose your words carefully, youll realize they are clueless. 

 

On the other hand, ive had indepth discussions on colorgrading from various cameras to make them look the same, where they definitely know the ins and outs.

Chances are a lot of them know far more than you about how hardware actually works. How memory mapping works, how instructions are executed, and so on.

Being able to put together some PC parts you bought and have it work is not the same as knowing about computer hardware.

 

And no, it is not ignorance that "allows Nvidia to be almost untouchable on deep learning", nor is it that which makes Intel the "go to CPU manufacturer".

 

Nvidia are not "almost untouchable" for deep learning. For consumers and hobbyists they might be, but that has a lot to do with the hardware available (AMD are behind on the GPU side, no dancing around it) and the investment made on the software side. Nvidia has a much larger and more accessible repertoire of deep learning information as well as partnerships with other companies.

And that is not to say that you can't do the same things with AMD hardware, but would you rather go whaling in the dark trying to figure something out, or do you go to the manufacturer which are providing easy to understand guides on how things work and how you can use it?

 

 

And people don't default to Intel for processors because they believe Intel processors are better than AMD. They default to Intel processors because they do not care which processor are in the machine they are buying. They buy something that seems good, and Intel has far stronger relationships with manufacturers as well as Intel having consistently been better than AMD for a very long time).

If you're building a laptop that you're going to sell to hundreds of thousands of people, you don't pick processor based on some ideology like "we need to help the underdog". If someone gives you incentives in the form of for example help with engineering, or software development or some other task where you might be struggling, you are more likely to pick them as your vendor. If companies like Lenovo and Dell switched the majority of their computers to using AMD processors, then AMD's marketshare would skyrocket. The vast majority of people would not go out of their way to seek out Intel processors, because they most likely don't even know there is a difference.

Chances are a lot of them know far more than you about how hardware actually works. How memory mapping works, how instructions are executed, and so on.

Being able to put together some PC parts you bought and have it work is not the same as knowing about computer hardware.

 

And no, it is not ignorance that "allows Nvidia to be almost untouchable on deep learning", nor is it that which makes Intel the "go to CPU manufacturer".

 

I have no misconceptions about the benefits of nvidia for professional work, and intel for the same. But AMD makes more economic sense vs nvidia&intel, and nvidia has a big premium on their professional cards. 

 

Unless you have a workflow that dramatically benefits from cuda, anything my pc cant handle ill off load onto a render farm. 

 

As for deep learning, it doesnt interest me.

[Citation Needed] on AMD making more economic sense vs Nvidia and Intel.

It entirely depends on what your use case is, as well as the experience of the developers. Possibly on the support as well.

 

 

It's like with Cisco in the networking world.

Cisco are HEAVILY invested in the educational field, and as a result almost everyone who has studied networking will have a good understanding of how to configure and troubleshoot Cisco equipment. Can you get a comparable product from Fortinet for cheaper? Probably. Will it be cheaper to retrain your staff? Possibly no. Is the money you potentially save (which might be none when you factor in the training needed) worth the high risk of something going wrong? Most likely no.

 

It's like the old saying "Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM".

1950x and wx9100 are pretty cheap compared to their counterparts. An openCL workflow pairs good with those. Unless you need cuda or something else, thats a lot of bang for your buck for a personal workstation. Unless you need cuda, or it makes a big difference in the time it takes you to finish working on something.

 

I think beyond that, youre talking render farm or really specific workloads.
