Can the PS4 Pro output 4k to displays that are not natively 4k?

Carclis

This may sound like a strange question but I'm wondering if the PS4 Pro allows you to output 4k to a display that is above 1080p but below 1440p (I'm using a 3440*1440 ultrawide). I ask because 1080p would not look very pleasant on this display and would be a deal breaker. Ideally it supports 1440p but from the menus I've seen it does not seem to be an option despite games such as Uncharted natively running at that resolution.

If the monitor isn't 4k then you cant have the 4k experience. Its like if you went to a shop and said can I have more clothes for less money

No. It's like asking if a 500ml/half pint bottle can take 1l/full pint. You can try... it won't work. :P

I think it will probably just output at 2560x1440 with black bars.

You can output 4k to a non 4k monitor on PC.

@Carclis Does it really matter though? It's a console, play them for fun and memes, not for graphics.

This is what I was hoping for.

From the others the general response is that displays are incapable of scaling a 4k signal to a 1440p one.

Apparently not. Consoles don't have 1440p generally.

I don't think so, consoles don't have 1440p IIRC.

It won't output a 4k signal if the device isn't registered as being 4k capable. Same with games that have HDR. Won't output or allow option to be selected if monitor it TV doesn't support it.

I guess I don't have a 1440p display to try it on myself but I though I had seen like, a Digital Foundry video or something where they talked about running it at 1440p?

Some devices will downscale. If it can take the input and downscale natively/internally to the display, then it is a "4k" compatible display. The PS4 knows not if they are real pixels or virtual (4K downscaled to 1440 etc). So if set to 4K, PS4 will output 4K. If monitor can take 4K then it can (irregardless of if 3.9k HD or "FULL UHD" OR "CINIMA 4K DOLBY WE WANT yet ANOTHER standard.tm") ;)

That's certainly true but I was specifically looking at the God of War themed system which is a PS4 Pro. Buying that would be somewhat of a waste if I'm playing at 1080p only, even if games do have higher graphical fidelity modes.

I have a 1440p display but no new console. Only an Xbox 360 which has less graphical power than a potato.

Since the last firmware (5.5) there is something like that implemented.

Its called Super Sampling mode wich supports a couple of games and works good on some and like shit on others (4 Goddess Online).

So yeah, there is something like that.

to my knowledge, no console is able to output 1440p, they are either 1080p or 2160p, nothing in between.

This is the answer OP Super sampling renders at the games higher resolution mode and outputs from the console at 1080p

Your statement is not true.

The truth is:
It depends on the Game!

Some games do, others do not.

You can't generalize it, you have to look at the Game you play and talk about that.

There are Games that use "true 4K", there are games that are upscaled.

I already know that is sometimes the case, but my issue is more concerning display support because display scaling is very often terrible. Plus your statement is more often untrue than true. Whilst games are almost never 4k, most commonly titles are upscaled from 1800p via checkerboard.

The new update to the Xbox One X will give 1440P.

The PS4 Pro does not yet that I know of.  At most, some games give the option to down sample when on a 1080P screen or take the extra compute power to smooth frames or other features.

I currently have my PS4 Pro hooked to a 1080P TV.  I can go take some shots showing some of the graphic settings the few games I got give when on a 1080P TV.

I also have a 1440P monitor, but...I can't hook the PS4 Pro to it (the monitor only has DVI-D).

I have previously tried to use an Xbox One S with an ultrawide. I had two options to either Black bars or the image stretched. I dont think that with the PS4 it will support an ulrawide nativley.

idk tbh

DVI-D contains the HDMI Signal.

I'm currently using a DVI to HDMI cable for my display and it even passes audio through,
