PSU Buzzing

Brexy9

I got a new RX 7800 XT Asus Dual model a few days ago, and since today my PSU has been making a really loud buzzing sound (Be Quiet System Power 9 600w 80+ bronze) and it never did that on my gtx 1070 that I upgraded from, should I upgrade my PSU as well?

What's your CPU?

Well I think you should upgrade regardless, I would recommend 700w minimum for a 7800 XT.

I have a 650w for my 6700 XT and even that only leaves me with ~150 "spare watts" while gaming with my power-hungry 12600K.

RM750e is tier A on the PSU Tier List and 80+ Gold.

If you want to save a bit, this Segotep unit seems pretty good and is tier B but I've never used it.

https://www.amazon.com/Segotep-Modular-Gaming-Supply-Certified/dp/B08W47MX46/

At the very bottom is the Thermaltake Smart 700w, but it's only 80+ White (terrible) and it's Tier F - it deserves to be in the trash lmao

does the buzz change when gaming? are you sure it's not GPU?

Good point... my 6700 XT had TERRIBLE coil whine when I first got it, and after a few weeks it got quieter, gone after a month

Could be a coil whine on your GPU, could be a typical noise coming off of your PSU upon upgrading to a more demanding GPU, either way it's best if you could check if the buzzing noize noise is the most persistent upon gaming or in idle. If the former, it's quite normal, some GPUs do that, if former it's time for PSU upgrade.

This is a very low end PSU. Low quality, double forward topology, 230vO input. No wonder it's making a buzzing noiuse. I would not rercommand to use this PSU with a semi high end GPU.

I did use that PSU with 3080 and  had no issues whoatsoever, so it's not a rule of a thumb. I'd say that largely depends on how old your PSU is and how much it had gone through overall.

Part of the problem with lower quality PSUs is just because you had no obvious issues, doesn't mean its not putting more stress on the rest of the system if the voltage regulation is poor.

it would be weird that it buzzes on idle GPU though, it's a sub 250W TDP card

True enough, but I never had any issues with so called quality  PSUs in contrary to black-listed ones, which would always cause some issues. I did have a minor contact with both low-tier, mid-tier and high tier PSUs, and those final ones never caused any serious problems to the hardware they had been supporting for. BQ supplies, no matter the sample, are the ones I consider a high tier PSU. On the other hand, there're are PSUs that would constantly cause lock-ups, PD failures or BSODs followed by Kernel 41 (63) errors out of a blue sky.

I used garbage "came with the budget case" PSUs for over a decade, with no problems either.  Doesn't mean it was a good idea.

Ironically the first time I had a problem was when I started having to buy PSUs separately, because it was during the dodgy capacitor period and the PSU went bang.  I was lucky at the time, it didn't cause any damage.  But ever since then I've been much more careful about what PSUs I buy, as it could have been worse.

It only buzzes when I game, but The Finals specifically for some reason, when I boot up R6 Siege, CS2, Dying Light 2 nothing, just The Finals for some reason and idk why it's so wierd, and my power consumption isn't that bad either, around 160w it says so idk why it's buzzing only in The Finals

Yeah because the noise is coming from the PSU compartment, not the GPU, so idk why it's making that HORRID noise, its peircing my ears

Would you recommend a DeepCool PQ750M/PQ850M? they're both on sale rn for around 110 USD in my country so I thought of getting either of those or the System Power 11 750w 80+ Gold from Be Quiet 😄 since they're all the same price

I've been using this PSU since 2019 or 2020 when I bought my Ryzen 5 3600/GTX 1070, could be just the age of it 😄

Deepcool pq-m series is tier A - that's great

Can't find the system power 11 on the tier list but I'd assume it's the same tier

Both will work great

No. I don't recommand anything less than ATX3.x with PCIe5.0 connector although AMD doesn't use it yet. https://hwbusters.com/best_picks/best-atxv3-pcie5-ready-psus-picks-hardware-busters/

You're referring to https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/ ? That list isn't updated for over a year. A lot of recent launched PSUs are not listed.

There is no System Power 11. System Power 10 is the latest version but it's not a good PSU. Read the review https://hwbusters.com/psus/be-quiet-system-power-10-750w-psu-review-a-big-disappointment/

that's weird, do you have unlocked fps in R6 CS2 or is it locked, because I know the whine on GPU gets worse if you unlock fps and better if you lock it to something significantly lower,

you could also try slightly lessening the voltage on the card, someone else has to tell you how because idk how that works on AMD

Definitely do that, using my secret undervolting calculation process, for a 7800 XT, the optimal settings in Adrenalin tuning are:

For you, the sliders will be in different spots because I have a different card

the Pure Power 12m is ATX 3.0, and has 2 normal PCI-e connectors plus it's 80+ Gold rated, that would be enough right? 😄 (750w version)

Ok... if it's unstable and crashes or glitches then raise the voltage to 1175mV, and if it's stable you can try lowering it more if you want

My card is much different than a 7800 XT so it might not even let you do 1175mV, that might be higher than stock

People have gotten their 7800 XTs down to 975mV but that's really low

I recommend setting those frequencies but keep voltage at default, then open unigine heaven GPU benchmark and keep turning down the voltage by 10 until it gets unstable, then increase it by 10-15 and keep it there

I tried you tune, same FPS and the PSU is much quieter now! But it's still buzzing so I'll be buying a new unit anyways but this will do for like a week until a new one I order on Monday arrives 😄
