I would get a different motherboard that includes plenty of PCIe slots for SATA and WLAN AIC's.

OVM is lighter but they say 4 GB of ram as minimum and to run Plex they recommend a I5 or amd equivalent Rizen 5.

- The G4560 is a 2C/4T CPU so more power for a few more dollars

- The board has an internal USB 3.0 slot so you could boot FreeNAS off a USB 3.0 stick

- The memory is bumped to a single 8GB stick so you can add an extra 8GB

- The 4TB drives are cheaper per GB, so you can get 3 to create a RAIDZ1 (if 1 disk fails you dont lose data). You can add another 3 disk RAIDZ1 to the pool later for a total of 16TB's. In FreeNAS you can upgrade the capacity of the disks one at a time as well. 

- Added SSD for caching but this is only optional

You can run with much less storage with ZFS. The ram is just used as a read cache, like almost all other OSes, so the ram isn't needed at all.

 

Id get bigger drives though, normally cheaper, and lower power.

 

Id also look at the 8tb externals, very good value drives.

 

and don't use onboard wifi, you have a wifi ap for that.

 

dual nics are almost never usefull for a home server, so one will be fine, if you want faster, go 10gbe, you can get a point to point link for under 100 these days.

Just an FYI If you're planning on chucking external drives for your NAS build tread with caution. I've seen some YouTube videos claiming you get "NAS" drives (WD red in the case of a few videos) in those enclosures. While that may have been true in their case, neither external drives I have came with a "NAS" drive. I didn't buy them for that purpose but I was curious. Both WD MyBook models came with a WD blue drive.

 

That said it appears that HDD prices have jumped? I just looked at the 4TB ironwolf from Newegg I bought last week and it is $10 more.

If it's a general purpose retail external HDD it'll never come with a NAS rated disk in it. You'd have to swap the disk out or buy a blank external enclosure.

Do you want to build your own system? If you just want to have a server you could get a HP Microserver Gen10. The case is better suited for server usage, and it is uses way less energy than the builds mentioned above. You might only need to switch to 4x4TB disks if you want to have that much storage.
You don't really need the power anyway if you are building a storage server.
If you are lucky you might still be able to find a Gen8, of which you can upgrade the processor to a Xeon E3, although you will probably need to add RAM to that one. It takes ECC unrestistered RAM.
The Gen8 also has iLO, for remote management and you could use RAID controllers like the HP222 or the P420.
