I did clean and repaste (AS5) the BFG card as it was the working one albeit with a maybe sketchy fan, the PNY card I could never get to work in the testing board so it being KIA isn't a big loss and it's possible it was already damaged and that's why it never worked for me. The BFG fan is some odd size but it started working OK after oiling it however it's got a loud inductor on the board that gets painfully hot at all times so....use at your own risk I guess. The 7800GTX needs to be re-pasted and cleaned but also worked, but was too old to run the Heaven benchmark I use to test cards quickly. the cooler is kind of a pain because it uses thermal paste to contact all the RAM for the back plate and the main heatsink and I didn't really want to invest more into it being that it's so very old and it did work. Make sure you have some good NON CONDUCTIVE compound or some thin thermal pads for that one as it takes a BUNCH of stuff to put it back together with 8 RAM chips on each side of the board or something silly. Those cards ran hot when new but I also ran them in SLI so...that probably didn't help. My dad has or had the other one, I'll see if he still has it and have him bring it when I see him later this year if you'd like to have the matched pair for SLI. With SLI it could run Command and Conquer 3 on all high settings at 1280x1024 with my Core2Duo E8400 at 4Ghz but with some stutter,then a 9800 GTX (now dead) could do that as a single card with much less stutter, and then later on a GTX 650 could do that even better as a single card and with much much less noise and heat than either of the above. The 7800GTX doesn't support DX10 or 11 or something so it's probably best suited as a late XP machine card than it would be for Windows 7. The 9800 GT would be OK in 7.

 

The other stuff was all un-tested or 'ran when parked'. Some was ran more recently like in the past year for the 945 board and CPU, so along with that RAM you basically have a working computer for $20 shipping. Though not a very fast one. I think the 945 board also got repasted with AS5, I know the P4 setup did for sure. The sound card worked at some point but there were driver issues with later versions of Windows so I gave up on it, never used the networking card but it came from the P4 system so presumably worked under XP.

They all fit into one even flow of cables, especially when coming off of cards like that where the ports are the same orientation on both ends so you dont need to cable fold.

The oldschool cheat was to use bobby pins to hold together 2-3 layers of IDE cable

Getting a build with more than two IDE cables to look nice is better than most sex, let's be honest here.

This is my Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS made by XFX, this is the first old graphics card that i bought, and its the one that has started my liking to collect old GPU's, when i got it i looked like if it was left sitting outside for a good while(hence the discoloration of the plastic and the bit of rust on the screws), but that hasn't stopped it, when i went ahead to test it on my test bench it was shorting something out but after i cleaned it thoroughly it worked, to this day it runs like a champ, and its overclockable

I salvaged some old parts from work to build a PC for my kid.

z77-i mobo with i7 3770K and 8gb of DDR3 1600mhz. 

I also added a (not so old) RX 580 gpu.

I tested everything and also did a small cpu overclock to 4,4ghz

Works great and the performance was surprisingly good.

Cinebench 770, Time Spy 4200, Firestrike 11500.
