Better yet, the govt. of RI gets hacked and has the proponents of the bill donate 100% of their next paychecks to various porn studios.

How in the hell would the cable companies allow this to happen? Who the hell is going to subscribe to high speed internet without free access to porn? No one wants a scarlet letter with the state.

how are they even blocked?

incompetent people block on DNS-level, so you just need to switch to any old DNS out there, like opendns or google dns.

this couldnt happen with net neutrality.

This will never go down well. I'm more concerned about them having a list of people who knowingly paid to access porn. Those who will be desperate enough will find a way.

To me, the best part is:

Quote

ISPs "shall provide... a digital blocking capability that renders inaccessible sexual content and/or patently offensive material as defined in § 11-31-1," the bill says.

I propose we also pass the following bill:

"City Halls shall provide a gravity blocking capability that renders weightless protected persons and/or objects as defined in § 3-16", which should help with children falling and getting hurt at public schools or precious chinaware being damaged in comedy acts.

It may sound difficult, but putting it in a law will surely make it feasible all of the sudden. #ThinkOfTheChildren #SpaceGhost2020

Not going to advocate porn of course but I am against this, it is a means to a greater wrong... Regulated Censorship, of which I am rightly against. The US Constitution is also against this as technically this bill would advocate a law that is essentially be a preemptive law issue.

Though my argument may not hold much water in some circles, but when challenged in Supreme Court (and I am sure it will) the law will be struck down if argued properly.

My 2cents...

While that may be true, the 10th Amendment supersedes the supremacy clause if there is no federal statute on the issue which as far as I'm aware there is not.

As I mentioned the argument would have be made correctly as I am not a constitutional lawyer but I do have a rudimentary understanding, I am sure the argument can be made that this will be struck down thought it will take a bit of time, There are other ways of course that the state residents can over come this. ii won't make suggestions as I would need to review RI's constitution and state codes to what and how this will be enforced be it can be.

One could even argue that the state is attempting to control a product by selling access and profiting, that is neither allowed even at the federal level but that is a stretch argument in itself as well....... Politics and law .... Bleh

There's more to this, but largely all I can think of to say is "RIP to the careers of anyone who votes for this". Not only will people VPN around this, but they will kick anyone who supports it out of office.

At least I would hope.

That's literally censorship

The idea of "only two sides" has always baffled me. As if everything is black or white, republican or democrat. It's retarded. The two party system needs to go. I don't even really understand why parties need to exist. Most people don't even listen to who they're voting for, they just choose red or blue. I know this is off topic to the OP, but I just really wanted to say this.

I believe the spirit of a two party system is to represent the extremes of the political spectrum in the form of parties and candidates so that the issues (for better or subjectively for worse) almost become black and white so that the political system is not overcomplicated. Otherwise it would be almost impossible for the existing system of the house and the senate not to be dominated for long periods of time by a single majority ideology and congress would become as confusing to conduct and understand as the U.S. tax code. It's obviously a very old system that is showing its flaws more than ever as time goes on and as technology and media increase and reflect the polarization in politics into society, but it is the basis of the entire political system in the U.S. and pretty radical change would have to happen for a better working system to be created. For now I think a safer fish to be fried is the electoral college system.

Edit: On topic, this move is absolutely ridiculous and is just a sign of what is to come from this "movement" if you may call it that, in the future. If this is being considered today in the current political climate, just imagine where we'll be in ten years.

no,  just sexual depravity apparently.

Seems kinda silly that they would claim they are doing this to earn money to combat human trafficking then.

I'd have to vote against it. They haven't even done it yet and they are already lying about it.

Well they probably had a choice between blocking porn or a chocolate raffle.  I guess their were too many men walking around RI with unrestrained penises so they decided to kill two birds with one stone.

Just some thoughts about this.

1) Porn is "harmful" in the same manner food is "harmful". Humans has a natural desire for it, and both can be damaging if we consume too much but in the right amount it is perfectly natural, healthy and even has benefits (although that is for masturbation in general, not necessary porn).

Rallying to ban porn makes about as much sense as rallying to ban food.

2) This is not a republican vs democrat issue. Both parties wants to ban porn, but they are using different arguments for it.

3) This is 100% a power thing. Politicians at the top wanting to control what other citizens does. The 20 dollar fee isn't the problem because anyone can easily pay that. The fee could have been 1 dollar and the core issues would still be the same. The government controlling what people can and can't do for enjoyment.

4) Whichever law you might find that seems to go against this, remember that if something fails the Miller test then it is classified as obscene and will not be protected by things such as the constitution or many other laws.

5) This would not be allowed under Net Neutrality since ISP would not be allowed to differentiate between a porn video and let's say a cat video on Youtube.

6) Using different DNSes, VPNs and such is not a solution to the core problem. It might help circumvent these rules (might be illegal to circumvent them?) but if things keep going the way they are, with more and more states/countries trying to control content on the Internet then sooner or later it will affect the areas where VPN exit nodes are too.

I find it interesting that they want to block porn on the internet yet are totally fine with the local adult store selling all manner of filth, most of it much more perverse than some amateur porn on Porn hub.

Dominatrix Whips? Sure. Nipple Clamps? Knock yourselves out. Ball gags? Why not. A 7 minute long amateur porno? Fucking hell no, better ban that shit ASAP.

Are these politicians even on the same planet as us?

What's next? Banning sex before marrige? Or not allowing it unless for procreational purposes only?

In that case we might as well do what Linus did:D
