Ryzen 7 2700X leak/rumor

  • Leaked within Futuremark’s 3DMark database, the Ryzen 7 2700X:

    • 8 core and 16 threads

    • 16 MB of L3 cache and 4 MB of L2 cache (20MB in total)

    • TDP of 95W since this is an ‘X’ part featuring higher XFR ranges.

    • 300 MHz faster base clock compared to its predecessor at 3.7 GHz

    • the boost clock may also operate 300 MHz faster at 4.1 GHz

  • Israel-based Cellebrite, a major U.S. government contractor, claims to have found a way to unlock pretty much every iPhone on the market.

  • They apparently have the ability to get around the security of devices running iOS 5 to 11 (right up to 11.2.6).

  • They haven’t publically announced this, but apparently they’re advertising the capability to their customers.

  • Their service, which "can determine or disable the PIN, pattern, password screen locks or passcodes on the latest Apple iOS and Google Android devices," but they have to have the phone in their possession.

  • Can cost as little as $1,500 per unlock.

Scientists invent floating 'firefly' light

  • Japanese researchers have created a tiny electronic light the size of a firefly that rides waves of ultrasound, and could eventually figure in applications ranging from moving displays to projection mapping.

  • weighs 16.2 mg, has a diameter of 3.5 mm (0.14 inch), and emits a red glimmer that can illuminate text.

  • has 285 micro-speakers that emit ultrasonic waves that hold it up, and have a frequency inaudible to the human ear, allowing it to operate in silence.

“Ultimately, my hope is that such tiny objects will have smartphone capabilities and be built to float about helping us in our everyday lives in smarter ways,” said the University of Tokyo professor who hopes it will be commercially viable in five to 10 years.

most memorable tech change i remember was ide to sata. as far as cpus it was skylake x haswell stuff changed in that gen.

Why is it you remember something as relatively miniscule as IDE to SATA, but not the Pentium 4/D to Core 2 Duo?

I did consider it it was like linus was saying with the athalons going to dual core. good point tbh idk

The Core 2 Duos are honestly still fast enough to be reasonably usable today (in basic tasks), if a bit power hungry. Pentium Ds, not so much.

 

That isn't to say I discount SATA entirely btw. At least until SSDs became a thing, the biggest benefit I found of SATA was the much improved cables. So much nicer to work with that there is no comparison. No more master/slave, or fiddling with jumpers. And hot swappable. Outside of that however, most consumer HDDs (besides maybe Velociraptors) were not really able to saturate SATA 1 enough to realize it's benefits.
