look at their diesels .. their CDI V6 diesel line up was hell of a lot more reliable than the beloved OM606 while making even more power and torque

plus their V12 TT thingy by AMG is seriously reliable ... if you look past some minor oil leaking issues and needing to disassemble half the engine for some of the seals

and V8s are ... id say .. better than BMWs offerings

Does BMW even have a V8 anymore? I thought it was all I6 and V10's now.

Huh. Funny. Last BMW I was interested in was the 2002-2003 M5. The newer stuff really doesn't appeal to me, especially with BMW's commitment to not putting a manual gearbox in anything ever again.

Yeah, but at least they have one of the best torque converted automatics made in their cars.

Still, I've never owned an automatic, and I have no intention to do so. 😧

That said... I haven't owned anything newer than a 2005, so...

I've only owned manual vehicles since about the same time, wouldn't mind an automatic some days but newer ones are just not as durable as the older ones with fewer gears. I'm not getting rid of my cheap little Scion hatchback though, it's too reliable to try and replace as I won't get anything that good again.

Not the steepest one I could find, just the quickest, here's a steeper one. https://www.google.com/maps/@37.8002773,-122.4179552,3a,75y,271.68h,73.56t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s7mUhZJdl6ARb1rQlia7S1g!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Yes, I could drive stick in the city, but it's just more convenient to drive an automatic, and the handbrake and clutch on my car are twenty years old and don't work nearly as well as they used to.

If you service and maintain them properly age wont matter and they will work just as good as when the car was still young.

About 90% of the driving I do is out of town.

That said, steep hills aren't much challenge for me, I've got experience driving on roads that are far steeper and waaaaaay more treacherous than San Francisco's paved stuff... In fact, today, I was on a Forest Service access road that was about 39 miles long, and the least steep part of the 9 mile ascent section was probably twice as steep as your average SFO hill street, and it wasn't paved to boot. 😄

I guess steep hills combined with stop and go traffic would be an excellent way to destroy a clutch

Some electric e brakes will disengage automatically with the seat belt on. They use 2 clutch switches. If anything that'd make it easier.

handbrake cables will stretch over time if they're used frequently. They can also be prone to snapping with age, depending on the car.
On my RX-7, the handbrake cable runs over the exhaust and when it begins to rust with age it becomes easy to snap thanks to the constant heat cycles. Yes it is "protected" by the exhaust heat shield, but that did not prevent it from snapping anyway.

It also depends on the engine, small engines rely more on the clutch than big engines with lots of torque.

So what? With their steep price id say it does not worth it for just one comfort feature...... Plus electric brakes are binary, they either locked or released, not ideal for starting on a steep uphill street.

Well, you can thank Subaru for figuring out a solution for you: The Hillholder. With the clutch depressed, when facing up hill, it automatically applies the brakes until the clutch releases. Then, it releases the brake. It's quite literally using the same 'trick' as using the parking brake until the clutch is engaging, except they patented it and license it to other automakers. I think it expired, though...

I know Ford loves the system. Our work vans have it, even though they're automatic and hybrids.

Engine size actually is not really a part of the problem. The mass of the vehicle, where the engine makes peak torque, and most importantly, the gearing, effects how easy or hard it is to take off on a steep hill. I'll use the peak torque bit here: I had a 2005 Subaru Baja Sport, non turbo, with the 2.5 SOHC motor in it. It made peak torque around 3,500RPM, and only a whopping 165 of them. Going up a hill was painful, difficult, and did require a lot of clutch slipping. My 2005 Subaru Baja Turbo, however, makes more like 250 ft-lbs of torque, and it's closer to to 2,500 RPM for the peak. Going up a hill from a stop is much easier, despite the vehicles having almost the same mass, and almost the same gearing.

As opposed to the 2011 Subaru Outback ebrake? It won't disengage, regardless of what you do. 😄 Dealer I worked at bought dollies just to deal with those, it was a massive pain.

oof. Yeah I first experienced an electric ebrake manual in a type r. It releases pretty quick and worked well automatically. I've yet to have to do any repairs on electric e brake components at honda. Done plenty of cable adjustments and seen a lot of 9th and 8th gen accords rust up the parking brake mechanism and torch the rear inner brake pads.

Did Honda get screwed by the defective control modules, too? I think that was the big problem with the Outback. It's also reason #928 why I absolutely hate the big, chonky, Toyota-wannabe Outbacks. It's supposed to be a station wagon, so why is it bigger than your company's SUV offering? And wtf happened to the sedan version of it? >_> SOA is full of fail.

I've never worked for Honda, but I almost got a job at a parts department for one. They ended up moving to a new location, and job apps got lost in the process, during which time I moved to a different part of the state. >_>

Which control modules? We had a big string of accords that would throw about every B-CAN code in the books and shut everything with honda sensing down. We were doing BCMs in them, but now theres a recall for an update. We do a lot of multipurpose cameras. They shut down sensing, and throw a code that the diagnostic is pretty much "clear code and if code returns replace module". I think they get too hot in the summer and start messing up stuff internally because theres no active cooling on the camera unit. High dollar item too.

Other than that, not too much with modules. Mostly mouse damage lol.

What else would you call it when it disengages when you plug in the seat-belt? :old-eyeroll:  IDK why its so funny, this is pretty much that is on the plus side for electric handbrake. Its just as easily gets stuck as their manual counterpart and cost quite a bit more. It just does not worth it.

I know that system, i drove a few audi that had it but all of them were automatic. Never seen it in a manual car though (granted aside from my golf i only drove company cars and all of them audi). Its a nice thing but manufacturers ask way too much for it IMO. Especially since it uses pre-existing parts and its only a software feature.

The original Hillholder was actually all mechanical. There was a linkage hooked to the clutch, with a line lock hooked to the brakes. The brakes would stay applied if you were on an incline until the clutch was released. This was available from 1992 onwards, I believe. My family had a 1995 Legacy with it, it worked really well. It did require adjustment, and going from a cable to hydraulic clutch really made it difficult to adapt, but they did...

The one for the parking brake. XD They would lock, then be impossible to unlock until the actual module was replaced. Repeat customers for that one were common, until they had a revised part.
