Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

I get the point you're trying to make, but it's not the same as owning one brand new, IMO.

Besides, not everyone wants to buy the "highest end" car they can afford. I'd much rather have a fun/reliable hot-hatch than a more expensive to run/maintain audi/BMW etc.

what is "fun" is subjective.

And then sometimes you just want flat out comfortable, and that's something a used car can't deliver.

At the end it's each to their own.

But as I said I'll never understand it. Even if you don't want a "better" car, you could just grap used one of the car you want to buy as a new one.
E.g. over here a new ST cost 29.300€ (base model), a good used one (under 100.000km, full pack, no damages, etc.) is around 18.000€.

A bit of new smell and no maintenance + warranty for one year isn't worth 11.000€ to me.

ok, maybe new economy cars can't deliver comfortable as well, but in the luxury car section, they absolutely deliver in comfort.

Better is subjective, to a degree.

And no, depending on one's situation, it doesn't always make sense to buy slightly used. I initially had that idea before I bought our elantra. I was going to buy one that was a year old with <50k for much less. Problem was, for the price of those cars, the finance rates were through the roof and by the end of your term, you'd end up paying almost the same for a new one and the monthly payments were much higher (and warranty is shorter).

As for financing, there's nothing wrong with it. Not everyone can afford to drop a large lump sum, yet need good reliable transportation for work. The only thing I've done to the elantra since December 2012 is rear brakes and oil changes. It's been wonderful not having to fix something or buy parts every couple of months like I have had to do on the Golf.

Again, I understand what you're saying and if it works out that way, it's a great way to save money. But it doesn't always pan out like that and everyone's in a different situation with different needs/options. One solution does not fit all.

To each, his/her/own. ;)

If I could "agree" with this more than once, I would.

Another thing about 0% financing. Even if you have the full sum in cash you should do the financing, and put that money into an investment to make 5%. In the end you will be paying less money than if you had just thrown down the purchase price in cash.

The world is not all black and white.

Are you gonna toss that tuner on your FoST? Actually can you do that and keep the warranty? I know that's a no-no for the Powerstrokes...

Honestly, I havent even looked into it.

I am going to drive the car a bit to find out what the low hanging fruit actually is, as it may very well not be power.

Thought of doing the lower arm bushing replacement myself, but after thinking about it. I probably will just fork up the money and get it done at the BMW dealer. They want somewhere in the region of $500 to get it done, and another $600 for the big service. If I were going to do it myself, then it would have been maybe $250 for the spare parts, wheel alignment, and the follow-up inspection. The problem is that I just don't have the parts or anything to do this kind of a maintenance.

So it's twice the price, but it's probably worth the hassle of getting it properly done.
