The turbo Chevette finally made it up to Minden late Saturday night. Spent most of the day yesterday testing and tuning - my friend driving and myself with the laptop in the passenger seat, adjusting the VE maps on the fly... Got it running much better, but still needs more tweaking. Acceleration enrichments were off. But it is running and pulls nice with about 5psi boost for the moment. :D

How are VW Passats for reliability? I do like the small 1.8T motors, but how do they do for longevity?

 

From what I've heard and keep in mind it's just what I heard and read, it should be good motor. Be very careful about turbo condition though, people usually don't granny 1.8T and the little snail likes to go bad if abused.

290k km's (180k miles) on my 1.8T's little snail. Still going strong. ;) As long as they've been taken care of (regular oil changes, have not overheated, etc.) they should be fine for a very long time. 

 

It's most likely the engine will be far less abused in a Passat, than in a Golf GTI or Audi A4.

I've heard about VW 1.4 and 1.8T 500k km motors still going strong, but you're a car guy, of course you're taking care of your baby. :) 

 

That's true, but still, the Passat is I have a family but still like to step on it if I am alone kinda thing. :D

Yes and I'm very aware of how it creates a slingshot effect or whatever you want to call it. I'm more conserned with low speed survivability. It's fucking hard to damage a frame at low speed, as you said, (maybe it was vetali ) that above 60 your chances go down from walking away, so at that point you're fucked anyway, so what's the point? I'll be fine. My neck will bother me for the rest of my life. Boo hoo.

On an unrelated note, during the day time I drive Wil my running lights and fog lights on. I was sitting in a turn lane at a light waiting for green and this bitch in a minivan pulls in the turn lane across from me and clicks on her high beams and just sits there looking at me. I just sit there looking at her with the wtf look on my face. I don't get it.

The fogs aren't exactly the brightest thing in the world either. Just standard halogen.

If your fogs aren't that bright why have them on in the first place when it isn't foggy? BTW fog lights and wet roads blind the shit out of anyone in a low car.

Completely agree with the above statement. I drive a little Corolla and I can't stand people in trucks driving with the fog lights on. I flash people a lot for doing that, but I'm betting most people do it unknowingly.

Even worse is when they have their brights on too. I can't see squat when they do that. It gets really dangerous sometimes

"missfire on cyl no. 2" and "low compression". Big red flag. I wouldn't touch it unless you're planning to rebuild it. 

 

Those things have "inter-warmers" (top mount intercoolers) that tended to get heat-soaked. That leads to detonation which leads to engine wear/damage. Sounds like this one has been driven hard. 

 

Thought about buying one of these before I got the Golf. I like them, but you need to make sure you find one that has been well taken care of - perhaps owned by an older or more mature driver. ;)
