Ryzen 3 1200 VS Intel Core i3 4170

Good day everyone!

It is about time to upgrade my PC and the first parts I want to upgrade/update is my Motherboard, CPU and RAM

Now I have a Intel Core i3 4170 currently an you can tell by the CPU I have, I'm in the buget range of PC parts

My question is, will it be worth it to upgrade to a Ryzen 3 1200 or should I be looking at a other Ryzen CPU. I'm switching to team red for the obvious reason and that is price of CPUs.

Some advice would be appreciated!

Thank you!

1200 is slightly better than the i5 4460. Nothing to look for.

I'd rather get the 4460 if you are upgrading to that.

I'd go for a Ryzen 5 2400 at the least.

Should try to wait until the Ryzen refresh in april, but an R3 1200 isn't going to be much of a step up

I would recommend waiting a little longer. R3 1200 will give you some performance increase but it will be too small to make the platform swap justifiable (+ the current prices of DDR4 ram)

Grab any of the fourth gen i7s instead.

Agree. Just don't get an overclockable one. Your motherboard has an H81 chipset so you can spare some money and get something like a i7 4770.

If the difference is small the .5ghz a 4790k provides will be a nice boost.

Only if they're at or below the price of an R5 1400, or around $150 I'd say.

I know, but as he was interested in a R3 1200, so a 4790K it might be out of his price range, if its not yeah you will get a little more performance out of it.

The 4790k is still near retail because it's top of the line for that socket. A 4770k is a much better buy. It produces similar results for almost $100 less.  Here's one for $220 (OBO)

Edit: I actually found a great deal on a 4790k. Usually they're $300+.

Ryzen, the socket is going to be supported for longer but you might want to wait until Ryzen + as its graphics are amazing for the price!

Used to be everywhere in LTT forums, had a break which lasted apparently 1 year LOL.

Gonna get up againnnn.

Wake me up if I sleep again like Oppy.

Yes, but a 1200 + 8gb ddr4 + b350 mobo is easily more than a 4790k

That auction ends in a week. No way the price stays at 155

It had a "Buy It Now" option for ~$250.  It's gone now though.  That's why I was urging him to take the deal.

TBH, i would like to know where you got that idea.

The i5-4460 is roughly around the mark of an FX-8150. The 1200 trumps the FX-8150 in nearly every way, also it's overclockable and it's cheap enough to justify upgrading for Zen+ in a few weeks. (i highly doubt, DDR4 prices are going to settle down much).

It's certainly better, than throwing 250 bucks out of the window for an old i7.

Edit: Yes, yes, i realized i switched charts.

Good news everyone...!

If the multiplier is unlocked, the CPU can be overclocked (looks at Asus H87M-Pro).

The Ryzen 3 1200 has IPC between Has well and Broadwell. The i5 4460 is certainly much better in most tasks over the FX 8150. I'd like to know where YOU got that information.

A old i7 goes for $150, not 250.

an FX8370 with slightly higher IPC than the 8150 can't even match an old 2500k, much less an i5 4460 xDxDxD

Yeah, sorry, i just realized, i accidentally switched charts. But:

Therefore, i still don't think going with an 4460 is a good choice. (Unless you absolutely do not want to spend the money for DDR4...)

Good news everyone...!

I'd suggest just staying on your current platform Motherboard/Ram... Ddr4 is too pricy right now, plus a R3/i3 of new gen will be a small step up which isn't a big jump for the price; I'd sooner suggest getting a higher end cpu of the same platform

Ideally a bios update to support haswell refresh since you're on H81 then try to buy an i7 4790(K optional because you can't OC on your motherboard), Xeon e3 1231v3, i7 4770(K optional), Xeon e3 1230v3, Xeon e3 1240v3(or any of the 12X0 v3s with numbers higher than 3 for X)
