VEGA FE is now a Mining card? Sort Of and AMD Radeon Software 18.1.1 is released

The AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition version 18.1.1 is out now bringing numerous bug fixes and funnily enough no performance improvements.

 

Here are the list of fixes:

  • Crashes or instability in a small number of DirectX9 games
  • Intermittent freezes or hangs during playback of protected video content
  • Blank screen occurs during video playback using Movies & TV player.
  • After the system resumes from sleep, a blank video shows during video playback in Edge
  • Corruption in Starcraft 2 on multi GPU (mGPU) enabled system configurations.
  • Menu item flickering in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on mGPU enabled system configurations
  • CLINFO may report incorrect values in mGPU system configurations.
  • Stuttering when using Radeon Overlay performance metrics on Radeon FreeSync enabled system configurations.
  • Color corruption may intermittently be observed in Radeon Overlay with multiple gaming applications and performance metrics running.
  • Enhanced Sync may not enable for Radeon Settings game profiles when using Vulkan API.
  • Bezel compensation controls when creating display groups may be misaligned or have no functionality.
  • Radeon WattMan fan slider may intermittently fail to change after loading profiles.

    • Radeon Chill may fail to enable on Vulkan™ API games.
    • Radeon Overlay hotkey may fail to bring up the overlay or may cause a Radeon Host Application crash intermittently on a limited number of gaming titles.
    • Radeon FreeSync may cause stutter with Radeon ReLive Instant Replay enabled on some fullscreen games.
    • Radeon Settings may experience a hang when enabling AMD CrossFire with three or more graphics products.
    • Trimming videos may fail to create a thumbnail if the video contains non-English characters.
    • Flickering may be observed on the performance metrics overlay when Enhanced Sync is enabled on some Radeon FreeSync connected displays.
    • Performance Metrics Overlay may hang if enabled when cycling display power off and on.
    • The "Reset" function in Radeon Settings for Display, ReLive, and Video may not work as intended when using Radeon Settings in certain regional languages.
    • Radeon WattMan may intermittently fail to load profiles for Radeon RX Vega on the global Radeon Wattman page.
    • A random system hang may be experienced after extended periods of use on system configurations using 12 GPU's for compute workloads.
    • The GPU Workload feature may cause a system hang when switching to Compute while AMD CrossFire is enabled. A workaround is to disable AMD CrossFire before switching the toggle to Compute workloads.

 

 

Also, VEGA FE is now being advertised as a mining card on AMD's product page for it. Ouch.  It should be noted that the hardware has not changed. The graphs and figures have not changed.

The only thing which has changed regarding VEGA FE is AMD referencing and advertising VEGA FE for Pioneers in Blockchain and thus Cryptocurrency.

Well I guess if the plan is for Miners to buy VEGA FE instead of VEGA 56 then I applaud AMD but there's no way they'll get miners to buy VEGA FE if they can buy VEGA 56 for a cheaper price. Unless somehow VEGA 56 and VEGA 64 gets nerfed in Mining.

 

So yeah, a good driver release with AMD silently revealing their true intentions? We'll have to wait and see.

trying to cash in on the mining hype I guess.  They should also change their name to Blockchain Technologies Group for an instant +200% to stock value

No but when the cash happens then their stock would be like -1000% or something. Also they need to keep up the illusion that gaming is important xD. /sarcasm

 

But for real, they probably do want Miners to buy VEGA FE instead of VEGA 56 and thus the marketing changes.

I wonder if this finally fixes the NiceHash issue not detecting RX cards. Sucks having to use old drivers.

And thus the professional graphics card shortage of 2018 happened, with Vega FEs and somehow Quadros in short supply. This lead to Hollywood lobbying against mining, which ultimately destroyed the market /joke

That's believable.  But just as torrents can be used for things other than piracy, mining isn't inherently bad imo.  If you already have a gaming machine you may as well just mine on that in your spare time - it's the people who suck up 5 - 10+ cards for the sole purpose of mining that are hurting the market.

Someday down the road, and no one knows when, the folks at places like AMD that make video cards will figure out there are actually people out there that use their machines for things other than mining cryptocurrency.  And when they do, POW, the shit is gonna hit the fan (hopefully).  LOL

In cases like that, whether it's GPUs, concert tickets, or ransom for encrypted files, I blame the people who are willing to pay that rather than the ones trying to sell.  People wouldn't do it if it didn't work.

Well they already advertised the vega FE as a blockchain card for months on their website...

And there's an option in the AMD drivers to switch cards to compute mode, optimizing them for mining, which has also been a thing for months...
