US Rep proposes Gov Ban on Huawei, ZTE under "National security" grounds

Wasn't there a big kerfuffle a year or two ago about some Huawei phones collecting far more data than they should? Not surprising that they wouldn't want this happening to government officials with a company based in another country.

Do you have a source on Tsinghua owning Softbank?

I can't find any evidence for this, and it seems the zero hedge article you linked basically goes "Softbank owns a large share in Alibaba, therefore they are controlled by the Chinese!" which doesn't make any logical sense to me.

Read the Zero Hedge blog post a bit more carefully and no, Softbank is not a Chinese company. What the post says is that the author wouldn't be surprised if Softbank sells ARM to a Chinese company in the future. It does not say Softbank is owned by a Chinese company.

If anything, it says the Japanese (Softbank is a Japanese company, and thus ARM is too) company controls a large share of the Chinese electronics market because it owns almost 30% of Alibaba.

 

Not sure where you got the part about Tsinghua owning them from. I can not find any evidence that supports that.

Looked into their official corporate history as listed on their corporate website and no such thing happened.

I think the Chinese government should go ahead and make Windows illegal(for gov agencies to use) for the exact same reason ... This is ridiculous but at the same time probably 'sad-but-true'

Wouldnt it just be as simple as goverment officials needing to use one set of phones created by one company (say microsoft) and it has no camera, no gyroscope. It would require facial recognition and two fingerprints to open for maximum security. Call it the microsoft secure phone. It would only support the most popular social media and cant run any other .exe than what it comes with. Security updates must be done by wire. 

 

Making the phone able to things like calling and offcourse tweet about random things. This would remove the need to ban certain companies and instead ban every phone except a certain few. 

 

 

NOTE: this is not a great solution, its only one possible. Idealy this wouldnt be an issue at all, but seeing as some goverments are paranoid about things being stolen, instead of letting some companies "spy" on you and others not. Why not allow it at all?

They practically have, by requiring MS to make a specific version of Windows 10 for them.  If there was an easy way for them to make their own Windows clone, they'd almost certainly jump at the chance.

Yea it seems reasonable to require an american made phone but not singling out 2 companies. I'm sure OPPO/vivo/other chinese companies could be bent to their governments will just as easily.

If they can prove a connection between ZTE or Huawei and the Chinese government (which, if they do, I wouldn't be surprised to be honest) then I'd say they have grounds for placing a ban on their devices.
