No, you just need to configure the OS for file sharing.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

I'm more interested to know why WD haven't responded.   By the sounds of it it is going to require a firmware update to fix which is bordering on requiring a recall for most domestic users.

Now I just use a SATA to USB adapter

Are there adapters that give you both power and data or do you have to pull power from the wall?

Mine pulls from the wall,  you can get ones that power through the USB however the problem with those is you are limited to 2.5" drives as the standard 3.5" drives require too much power.

I figured. I need one of those! Do you think you could power a 3.5" 5400RPM drive off the USB header?

Depends on the drive but generally no,

ssd = upto 3 watts

2.5" = 0.7 to 3watts

3.5 = 6.5 - 9 watts

USB1-2 output 500ma (2.5 watts)

USB 3 900Ma (4.5 watts)

While there will be fluctuation I wouldn't count on anything being higher than that unless specified (i.e fast charge supported USB ports)

The 2.5" one gets both data and power from a single usb port. For the 3.5" it needs a power adapter. Some SSD used to come with one with their drives.

So according to those numbers, there should be an adapter for 3.5" drives that uses 2 USB 3 ports :D

They do not exist. The 2.5" and 3.5" are different adapters.

My WD MyPassport drive pulls its power over USB 3, although my external Seagate drive(which is a full 3.5" drive) takes its power from the wall.

The thing is some motherboards do put out enough power,  Some are designed to do charging as well or are simply designed with the idea that several devices are going to be powered from the same supply.   If you check yours you might just have enough power on your USB3 to get away with it on a WD green or something like that.  Otherwise for fail safe and portability (for use on other computers) the wall plug really isn't that inconvenient.

They do have it for USB 2, saw quite a few of them, especially those really cheap ones.

Here are the adapters, the first 2 will work with 2.5" and 3.5" drives, these will require a power adapter no matter what drive you using including the 2.5".  One of them also supports IDE. This one, will end up with more cables once it's all set up. The other one is just a single power adapter and USB 3 cable.

This one is for 2.5" drives only and they don't need a power adapter
