Who thinks Linus should make an app for the forum?

There is no point. The forum works perfectly well on mobile devices web browsers these days.

it'd be cool, but i personally woudn't use it.. my eyesight is bad, so i always prefer my laptop anyway..

this is very true. it pretty much feels like an app already, just in a browser.

if you don't like the mobile site you could always try tapatalk, tough imo the mobile site works wonderfully.

I use the forum about 50/50 between my pc and phone, I don't think I would use an app

I never said the mobile sight doesn’t work fine. But I feel like push notifications would be nice with an app. That’s all

That's literally the only benefit there'd be to having an app really, and something so small isn't worth the time to make an app

Just log in on your web browser every once in a while. Done. There's no need for an app to use something that works perfectly on mobile.

Tapatalk has been buried for years now. It used to cause issues to forums backend and got it disabled.

App Fatigue i dont need 100 Apps when i have one that can already do the task.

 

Id rather open my browser that is an all in one to access many things then have to leave it and open an app that only does one thing. Yes it would do that one task better but probably not enough that it would matter to me.

Anyway, even if there was an app, what do you think it will be? It will be nothing more like many website apps, which is just a web wrapper. In other words, a bookmark. So, just bookmark or make your home page Linus Tech Tips.

Not going to happen. Been asked so many times lol. They have always said no a their is no reason to do it and the expense and upkeep of the tools and people to develop for another platform is too much. Mobile browsers have no problems with it today unless your running on something obscure.

 

 I also find generally that apps for web sites perform worse, use more data, are a pain in the ass to setup, use, run, optimize, etc. Web pages in your browser are almost always better for forums. Especially one like this where they are constantly doing things to make it better. Having to split their workforce between 3 platforms instead of unified on one is unnecessary and a waste nowadays.

I use Mozilla, and I get push notifications if I leave my browser open in the background. Works perfectly fine for me, other than coming back and checking later like a "normie".

You can also set the forum to e-mail you for a notification like getting a reply to a post, or someone quoting you.

Then you can read the post in your e-mail, and you decide if its worth hitting the link in the e-mail to jump you into the discussion or not, avoiding loading the website for nothing. Not saying that it is for everyone, just presenting another possible setup.

I don't get the emails, so I forgot that was an option. Thanks for pointing that out!

100% can agree that an app is not necessary. Apps should only be made if an existing website does not provide the same functionality on mobile, such as in the case of Facebook. (Although I can argue that if you run a Facebook page or need business / advertising features on Facebook, the mobile apps for Page Manager and Ad Manager still suck and do not provide the same functionality as the Desktop Business Manager website, available at business.facebook.com but I digress)

 

IP.Board forums and communities are among one of the few forum frameworks that work just fine on mobile, sans app. If you want notifications, just enable email notifications, because you have your email on your phone already, right?

Yeah I'd say its is a def no. Floatplane I could see it getting an app pretty quickly though due to the type of platform and how much that would help it.
