New 2FA System Relies on Taking Photos of Ordinary Objects

Source 1: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/researchers-devise-2fa-system-that-relies-on-taking-photos-of-ordinary-objects/

  • Scientists have created a custom two-factor authentication system named Pixie that relies on users taking a photo of a personal object.

  •
  • Pixie works by requiring users to choose an object- like their watch or parts of their body- as their 2FA key.

    • When they set up the Pixie 2FA protection, they take an initial photo of the object that will be used for reference.

    • Every time users try to log into their account again, they re-take a photo of the same object, and an app installed on their phone compares the two photos.

      • it does not use remote servers -. All image recognition operations are handled locally

  • Because only the user knows what that object is, an attacker cannot intercept SMS communications or exploit flaws in the SS7 protocol to hijack the 2FA process like they can with SMS verification codes

    • Even if the attacker knows the user's object, users can take the photo only at certain angles or only of a small section of the object.

  • In automated tests, Pixie achieved a false accept rate below 0.09% in a brute force attack with 14.3 million authentication attempts — nine wrong identifications every 10,000 login attempts.

    • In a test with 42 participants that took place over eight days in three different sessions, researchers say that "Pixie outperforms text-based passwords on memorability, speed, and user preference."

  • You can get the app from GitHub repository and test it out. (Source 2)

  • Users should be careful not to choose perishable objects like food

Student used keyloggers to change his grades 90 times

Source 1: posted by hey_yo_ https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/854612-university-of-iowa-student-used-keyloggers-to-change-his-grades-90-times/

Source 2: https://hotforsecurity.bitdefender.com/blog/university-of-iowa-student-used-keyloggers-to-change-his-grades-90-times-19181.html

  • A former University of Iowa student has been arrested by the FBI on federal computer-hacking charges in a high-tech cheating scheme in which he allegedly obtained advanced copies of tests and changed grades for himself and classmates.

  • The 22 year old carried out the scheme by secretly installing keyloggers in computers in university classrooms and labs that allowed him to record what his professors typed, including their credentials to log into university grading and email systems

    • Enabling him to intercept exams and test questions in advance and to repeatedly change grades on tests, quizzes and homework assignments

  • The FBI says Graves changed his grades more than 90 times over a 21-month period, and changed grades on numerous occasions for at least five other students.

  • He was arrested on Tuesday and is charged with intentionally accessing a computer without authorization to obtain information, and knowingly transmitting a computer program to cause damage. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

  • The university spent $68,000 investigating the breach and improving IT security.

  • The university warned students that those involved could face expulsion or suspension.

  • “So while we’re talking here, I’m gonna go install Chrome,” he continued before he started laughing, with many people in the audience cheering.

  • “And we’re going to not make Google better,” he added when unchecking the box to send usage statistics and crash reports to Google

Scientists weigh life

Source: https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/26/scientists-weigh-life/

  • Scientists have created a scale that can measure the mass of single cells “monitor how [the cell’s]  weight changes over time … with a resolution of milliseconds and trillionths of a gram.”

  • This system let the researchers see that cells exhibit second-to-second weight fluctuations while alive but these fluctuations stop when they die

  • How does it work?

    • The cells, which usually weigh about two to three nanograms, are weighed under controlled conditions in a cell culture chamber. The weighing arm, a tiny wafer-thin, transparent silicon cantilever coated with collagen or fibronectin, is lowered to the floor of the chamber, where it nudges and picks up a cell. “The cell hangs on the underside of a tiny cantilever for the measurements,”

That was the worst WAN Show ever.  First we waited 45 minutes for them to start.  Then there was an echo, and they spent several minutes adding to it (while denying that they were adding to it) instead of restarting to fix it.  After that they spent like half an hour in a Floatplane circle-jerk.  There was almost no actual tech news.  They did take the time to mention how there were several good tech topics they wouldn't be discussing though.

It still didn't piss me off as much as the time they were an entire hour late.  Turned out they'd been screwing around with fans.

If you have guests on the show please put some more effort into the audio quality cause on Kyles end it was absolutely atrocious. I stopped watching about half way in because it's punishing to listen to that overdriven mic audio. Bad audio kills every video for me no matter how great it otherwise could be.
