i would say only get it for experimentation purposes. the 2GB vram thing really holds it back in modern games, and most games now don't support SLI.

That's the same bottleneck I hit with my 1050 and 660, the 2GB of VRAM can be quite limiting. In fact on the 1050 I think it actually holds the GPU itself back, it's actually pretty darn powerful for it's size, even the 660 is surprisingly strong for it's age. Just swapped my 1050 Ti in though since I'd like the bit more VRAM for better textures.

Heck yeah, 1050 Tis pack a lot of punch for their size. I have an EVGA FTW card too, incredibly overkill cooler (dual fan with three good sized heatpipes and a full finstack across the whole card) and an extra 6 pin power for basically no reason because sadly Pascal won't let me push the card as hard as possible. My first GPU was a single fan 1050 Ti that just ran of the PCIe slot, still performed like a champ.

My GTX 960, which is as fast as a GTX 1050 Ti, has only 2GB VRAM. It's limiting it on many games.

My X5690 is overclocked to 4.5Ghz and with a GTX 1060 3GB it runs most 1080p games at 60FPS with no issues.  I do have it watercooler though. 3GB is all you need for 1080p unless there are huge textures. Wish I had the 6GB version.

I'm running D2 at 1080p High with 60fps on a 1050 Ti and i7 950, I do get fps drops here and there but it's usually pretty solid.

I scooped a EVGA B-Stock 1080 Gaming SC before RTX was announced and stuck it in with my X5675 at 4.6ghz, have never seen it bottleneck in anything short of lower performance in games with really poor multithreading. Happily keeps a 144fps+ experience at 1440p ultra on Doom and usually brand new games give me at least a 90-120fps experience on high settings in any game I've thrown at it so far.

I have a w3680 in my asus p6x58d-e with 48gb ram, but I can't seem to overclock that cpu whatsoever. what settings are people using for that particular cpu?

I'm still gonna be on X58 for a good while yet tho, but I do have some X99 stuff arriving tomorrow. Tbh may just jump Intel X series chipsets for a while yet since they're just fun to mess with.

I mean you've got a claimed 16+2 phase VRM so those shouldn't be the issue. Is it just not letting you change settings or what? On X58 you usually pump up the BLCK once the multiplier is maxed. BLCK will change the CPU core speed, uncore, and RAM and such. Doesn't effect PCIe, apparently upping that can help but 110 is about the max you wanna push, I usually run 103 or 105.

It is indeed, a bit tricky and not as simple but it works. Cpu is “moded” as well

I gotta solder some pins on my EVGA Classified 4-way SLI V1.0 to let it work with Westmere-EP CPUs as it's a hardware issue, was fixed on the V1.1 and newer but I can't exactly RMA a motherboard from 2009 anymore.

Are you on the latest bios? Some older, common microcodes will fail to post if you change the Uncore multi.

 

What do your settings look like which aren't working?

Asus P6X58D-E is a pretty good motherboard, I have one on my main PC. What settings you tried? Did you watch Tech Yes City's X58 Xeon OC guide?

X58 Classified 4-Way now working with a Westmere-EP 6 core (W3670). Had to solder two sets of pins together since mine is a V1.0, but now I can repaste the chipset heatsink since I had to remove that, then put it all back together and try some overclocking with disgusting voltages if temps will allow. In a week or two I hope to have a watercooling loop on the CPU (360mm slim rad, Watercool Heatkiller IV block) so I should have a heck ton of thermal headroom. For now I'll use a Cryorig H5 Universal since it's the biggest finstack I have that works on LGA1366.

Yeah, shouldn't condensate too much, I'd just put some paper towels around the socket to catch any stray drips, and see how it goes. 

 

As for my PC, sadly the CPU doesn't wanna hit 4.5 no matter what voltage I throw at it, either I'm an idiot (highly likely), or I should try one of my X5675s or my X5670.

A bit off topic but I'm the opposite... I tend to get caught off guard when a cashier (who many times is young enough to be my kid) asks for my I.D. when buying beer...

Just cranking up the multiplier and vcore. I watched that guide but he doesn't do the w-series which has unlocked multiplier

Max the multiplier then use the BLCK to hit the speed you want. Keep in mind it will up your uncore and RAM speeds as well as the CPU core, you'll probably need to dial that back. Gonna reccomend Tech Yes City's guide again, he explains everything you need to know pretty damn well, and I got my CPU at 4.2Ghz (uncore 3.2GHz) and RAM to 2000MHz following it:

The unlocked multis are cool for quick testing, but in general 200 BCLK is a much better starting point then the default 133. I‘ve only had a single CPU that couldn‘t manage that, so its absolutely doable.

Facts. I think my X5670 misbehaves much above 220BLCK, but pretty much everything can go a 200. My i7s may be an exception though, I should fiddle with my i7 950 and see if I can push 200.

My 950 couldn't do 200 bclk. My X5675 has done 215 for the last two years without issue. Never tried higher though.

 

Personally, I think higher bclk and a lower multipler is better than the opposite, if your chip plays ball. The uncore speed improvements from faster bclk result in a lot snappier system IME.
