3.95ghz crashed whenever I came to the Windows boot screen. 3.85ghz with 1750 ram seems to be running fine

I just bought a 1366 board for a friend for $45 including shipping. I also just bought a ASUS Rampage 3 formula for $117 for myself. Even dual socket boards aren't too bad sometimes if you shop around. I got mine for about $90

Ah yeah I see! Like the triple fan setup you have, guess you need the extra cooling. 

 

I was super surprised how cool this Xeon runs overclocked, the previous 920 that was in the same socket was a hot potato. 

 

Main in issue I have with my board is a lack of real PWM fan headers.

Looks like a lot of us have it... I was gutted the Elite came out just two months after I built my loop in the non elite.

Noice! Know how it performs in GTA and Beam.NG and such? I just sent @Coltonw023456 one (W3550), and he's worried it may still stutter like his i5 did.

Stuttering in video was caused by 8gb RAM, I didn't have any problems after upgrading to 12gb.

Awesome! He has 12GB, so he should be good. Also has a 1050 Ti, which is better than the 660, so stuttering shouldn't be a problem.

I'm thinking about turning my dual socket computer into a "2 gamers on 1 computer" type build. What do you guys think?

 

I would probably do it pretty much how Linus and Luke did it in their video with 2 gamers 1 cpu only I actually have two cpus. I have a gtx 1060 6GB for one user and I have access to a 1050Ti for the other. Both users have the equivalent to one X5690 as well. 

 

The reason I would do this is because me and my roommate's desks are right next to each other and we have both started streaming a little but we have had to take turns using my PC to do it because his cpu is kinda lame. I would use my extra parts to build him his own x58 build but I don't want to spend money on another psu and case and neither does he.

 

Edit: Also I would not be using the mobo in my signature. I have a different one I would be using assuming I can get it into this same case (It is even bigger than my current mobo)

I've really enjoyed reading this thread (all 13 pages!), and I have to jump in with a question.

I'm not a X58 owner (yet) but am contemplating it (for reasons below) - and I'd really appreciate your advice if it makes sense.

 

I'm looking to build a home server to learn and experiment mostly  - it would initially be running FreeNAS (as a VM) among other things in VMs or containers (Email server, software development, data analysis, eventually home automation, machine learning and the sort. But no gaming).

=> This implies multi core for all the VMs (preferably 6+),  ECC  RAM support (for FreeNAS) and VT-d. Thus, a Xeon.

 

Problem is that the darn things (together with the motherboards) cost a pretty penny (I don't want a very expensive rig right now as I am experimenting, but might need one in a couple of years when I know where I need high-end performance).

 

Would it make sense in this day and age to buy a Dual CPU Xeon X5670 rig?

I can find X5670 CPUs for about $60 each, and a motherboard for about $130 - thus about $250 in all.

[A Dual CPU setup based on an E5-2670 or 2660 costs about $500, and a single CPU setup on these same processors is $450+].

I think it would make a lot of sense yes, and you dont even need to pay that much for it, if you click here you will be taken to an ebay link where someone is selling 2 x5670s as a pair for $70. If you look some more you can find a dual socket motherboard like the one in my signature for about $90. I think a system like that would suit your needs well. When you buy a psu though be sure to get a modular one that can support two separate cpu power cords

Yes. Build it. They're totally awesome CPUs, my X5675 is pretty dope and has handled gaming and multitasking fine, gonna try some streaming tonight (It's also flawless in video editing and such). And talk with @WhisperingKnickers, he has a dual CPU X5690 build, and is planning to doing a two gamers one CPU (or in this case two CPU) setup with it, so he and his roommate can both play and stream.

Nice - thanks a lot for the quick feedback (you too @Zando Bob)! 
And as I'm always one to follow the advice of strangers online (esp. when it reinforces my own beliefs), it's time to get cracking on buying the parts. And I'm going to need some help/advice here too.

But first a little about my constraints. I'm in India now, and am looking to buy these parts in the US and have them shipped to a friend on the west coast. He's coming to India in a couple of weeks and will bring them along. This does mean though that I cant take much risk on DOA/non-functional parts (as it will be a pain shipping them back). Would it then make more sense to buy new rather than used/refurbished?
And I also thus have to order things by tomorrow or so - to make sure my friends gets them on time. Thus, less time for research.

 

1. The CPUs: The $70 ones above look like a great deal. However the $59 ones (each) that I have seen are new. Safer to go for the new?

 

2. The Motherboard: I found a couple of Supermicro X8DTI-F on Ebay ($110 and $133) - but these have CPUs/heatsinks on them already which I'd have to remove. Better to buy a board with none of these on I'd think? I've also seen:

• a X8DT6-F for $109
• a X8DTI (no-F) for $110
• a X8DTE for $125 
• a X8DT3-LN4F (+E5630 + 24GB RAM) for $140

Any thoughts on which of these are a better option (I honestly cant tell the different between these)?

Or just take the cheapest and run?

As far as the cpus go that is up to you, there isn't really any reason why the used 5670s wouldn't work but if you feel more comfortable with the new ones I can understand that. then again though you are paying extra for a product that is already 6 years old.

 

For the motherboard as long as they have a normal ATX form factor any of them should work. I didn't double check all of those but if you look on their supermicro product page it will tell you what form factor it is in.

 

Another thing I forgot to mention is that none of those dual socket boards use standard heatsink mounting points. you will need to get special screw adapters or buy one of these heatsinks as they come with interchangeable mounting systems and it comes with ones that are designed to work with these server boards
