As far as the cpus go that is up to you, there isn't really any reason why the used 5670s wouldn't work but if you feel more comfortable with the new ones I can understand that. then again though you are paying extra for a product that is already 6 years old.

For the motherboard as long as they have a normal ATX form factor any of them should work. I didn't double check all of those but if you look on their supermicro product page it will tell you what form factor it is in.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that none of those dual socket boards use standard heatsink mounting points. you will need to get special screw adapters or buy one of these heatsinks as they come with interchangeable mounting systems and it comes with ones that are designed to work with these server boards

Thanks - I'd never have known about the heatsinks.

$65 a pop per heatsink. That's almost the same or double of the CPUs (depending on which one I'll buy).

My senses tell me I'll be back asking about a few more components in the morning!

Hmmm.... What's the fan profile set to in the BIOS? My ASUS mobo gives me silent, standard, and turbo (I have it set to turbo for better temps).

I had a dell poweredge T410 for a while. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of options for this because it uses proprietary parts. Does you machine have the shroud to direct the air flow?

What you could do is find some fans that will fit and mount them in any way that you can manage and you might have to clip the wires and attach the original flan plugs onto the new fan wires (Assuming your fan headers are proprietary like mine were). Other than that you can do what @Zando Bob said and look in the bios and see if there is a setting to reduce the fan speed

Hmmmm.... Then IDK what to do. Servers are meant to be run in big racks in a data center, so they don't care about noise (and I'm assuming they just set the fans to 100% permanently). Either getting new fans like @WhisperingKnickers suggested, or getting new fans and a new mobo, would fix it.

You could do that but even if they look like normal fan connections be sure to test it, Mine had little plastic guards keeping normal fans from being plugged in

RIP. Proprietary stuff should be highly frowned upon in the industry and actively discouraged.

You will likely need a voltometer and some wire clippers or there might be videos available on how to do it. I'm not sure what each of the wires does so I'm not sure how much I can help with that part :/

You could probably also go the Linus route of zip tying heatsinks onto the CPUs; if done properly that should be just as good while being cheaper. Or you could go the route of thermal compound bad enough that the heatsinks stay on without screws :P

Even that can be hard with the poweredge systems haha. Some of them have backplates that have screws that come up into the heatsink rather than the other way around and the back plates cant be removed and they block the holes that would lead through the motherboard

I got an idea...

I have a spare working dell system powersupply from another system now all it has is the 24 pin CPU power and 4 sata so im thinking of buying2ofthis to power my fans and strapping them on to the heatsink. what do you think sounds like the cleanest solution to me

That could potentially work yeah. I don't know from experience but I have heard bad things about those adapters so before you do that look up some reviews and if it looks legit then bam you have yourself a solution. If not though it could be dangerous

@WhisperingKnickers @VenomZ_

I really thought about swapping the wires on the new fans and removing the plastic header from the mobo so i could just stick the connector right on the mobo without adapters. That is your call. You could just cut the original connectors off the stock fans fans and solder them like i did for a cheap (free) adapters,
