Is the 1080 a good value?

I have been a happy gamer using my 6600k + 1060 6GB but I am selling the 1060 6GB to my brother (almost as a favor) and I need to purchase a new GPU. 

 

I am looking at getting a 1080 as the $550 mark is my budget. What other options are viable in this miner market?

None. The 1070 and under have been inflated and still are. The 1080 is a very good card that should last you quite a long time. 

 

Also, here comes the bottleneck squad!

I have been out of the loop of new tech for the last few months, which CPU would be a good pair for the 1080?

the 1080 isn't a good value

technically no high end card is ever a good value , you're paying for the fastest speed possible , not the best value possible

and with gpu prices being so high lately , gpu's in general aren't a good value right now.

I wouldn't pair the 1080 with anything below an i5-K as single-threaded performance starts to drag down the 1080. I would get the 1080 and see how it serves you and then consider if you'd like to upgrade to an i7-6700K or 7700K.

This statement is true from a pure price/performance standpoint.

 

It becomes less true when you factor in the price of a noise cancelling headset and an air conditioning unit.

Maybe an AIB RX Vega 56 when they come out. But looking at your display, isn't a GTX1080 overkill? For 1080P, I would suggest at most a GTX1070.

Key word is "if." It's extremely difficult right now to find a 56 in stock for a reasonable price.

At 144hz I think 1080 will actually make sense.

1080p at 144hz in modern games can be extremely demanding. A 1080ti would struggle with a game like The Division hitting 144 fps at ultra.

Its an ok card. I think its worth it one a few games. Others not so much. Some games kill my cpu so I end up turning down graphics or setting a frame limiter. Seeing how I can get a nib pny 1080 for 400/350, that's worth it to me if I wanted a great "gpu" for a great price.

This Question is absolutely impossible to Answer.

 

It depends on:

- your Software

- your Settings

- your personal Target (how much fps are enough for YOU).

 

As long your CPU delivers enough fps for you, it does NOT MATTER what bottlenecks (you will ALWAYS have a Bottleneck somewhere in a Gaming PC.

 

If your CPU doesn't deliver enough fps for you, the GPU is not interesting. Since your CPU won't deliver enough fps with ANY gpu.

Was in same situation before. I ended getting a 1080ti instead of a 1070 as i manage to find one on amazon uk (555£) for the strix variant.

 

The 1070 strix that i wanted was 490£. And it still stands same as of today after 2 months . Online retailers did not count because they are still sold out, the ones i excluded had cheaper but they dont ship here so yea.

 

so yea i would bank on a 1080 primarily it is the best value u can get for now amist this mining craze

The 1080 is a great card, the 6600k would be fine, if you haven't already, I would OC it just to get your moneys worth out of a K sku chip and the single threaded perf is a boon to the 1080.

 

If you were keen a 7700k or waiting for an 8700k would be a fine option for an upgrade.

Yeah I have the 6600k at 4.6, I am sure I could push it further though.
