Hello,

I have never lived with a cat, but I might have to in the future. I made my own build, which was rather expensive, and I bought a 144Hz 1440p freesync monitor I would love not to ruin from cat scratching etc. What solution do I have to protect the setup? ( except the obvious which is locking the room down, and let the cat wander in the other rooms)

Get a case without glass, only metal with holes for ventilation.

Get the cat one of those "scratch board" for it to ruin

That's a tall order.

1. Cats usually dont listen to you unless you have food.

2. The PC gets warm after use, that fits the criteria of "perfect sleeping place" for a cat

Make sure your case has lots of dust filters, cat hair gets everywhere, and I'm sure it would be a nightmare to clean out of a PC case

My cats don't go on my desk when I'm in my room except when there is a drinkable item that taste good for them but they know enough not to go on it at all

Uhh.l. While I'm sure there are exceptions, typically speaking, a computer monitor is not the kind of thing that a cat would target or gain any satisfaction from sharpening it's claws on.  Smooth plastic things are generally not to their taste.  They like things that they can sink their claws into, literally, like cardboard, carpet, upholstery and stuff like that.  I looked into this thread expecting someone being worried about a cat chewing on wires... Scratching on a monitor is really not what I expected. o.O

The only way to cat proof a computer, is to never have a cat in the first place.

Regardless of what you do, the cat will fuck with your computer. If it's not eating the cables, it will lay down on an air vent or pee on your computer/monitor/keyboard/mouse pad. Cats are evil, don't get a cat. (Source : I have a cat)

I have cats, no issues with them messing with my computer. Doesn't get warm enough for them to want to sit on it, and the worst they've done to the monitor is rub against it. Honestly, at least for me it's not an issue. Maybe having something better for them to sit on in the same room as your computer will make them sit there instead.

Yep on number two.  My cat likes to sleep between my folding rig and the main rig.   The 2nd cat likes to sleep on the dryer.  :P

Though, it is summer time and she likes to sleep by the sliding door now.  Winter time, she sleeps by the computers.  She doubles as my feet warmer.  :D

Prepare to be cleaning your computer way more often.

My cats don't bother any of my PC stuff. If your cat chews cables, put some dish soap on the popular ones and it'll discourage the device from eating them

As a former cat owner and someone who once lived in a home with like 7 cats, you're being paranoid.

The only thing a cat would want is to sit on top of a tower. Monitor does nothing for a cat and neither does a keyboard unless it's a laptop since it will carry heat.

Cats hate citrus and surfaces like aluminum foil. There's a start there. Cats can also be trained, but they aren't dogs. Give them something else like a perch or use clicker training with treats as a reward. Yelling no at a cat will rarely get a reaponse.

My cat likes to lay on top of my pc. The exhaust fans there provide a nice warm place to sleep, plus it wants to be near me. My solution was to put a cat pole with a cozy platform next to it. It has never tried to us any of my pc's to sharpen it's claws on. Cat hair will migrate even if it's not allowed in the room. The most annoying things are when it walks across my keyboard, and stands between me and my monitor in an attempt to get attention, or tries to get involved when I'm building/modifying a pc. Love the little guy though, so it's not a big deal. :x

Best Excuses:

#1(simple) "Well, I never liked that stupid thing anyway!"

#2(complex) "Obviously there was a flaw in the material, probably due to the inadvertent introduction of contaminants during the manufacturing process."
