What power supply do you recommend?

Go to solution Solved by BunnyHunter67,

Thanks guys, I've settled on the EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2.

I'm doing a large pc upgrade soon. Ill be upgrading to a 7700k 16 gigs DDR4 ram, A motherboard that I haven't decided on and an SSD. I also currently have a gtx 1070. I currently have a Corsair cx600 that ive had for about two years now. Im wanting to use a better PSU for the new hardware. I have no clue what brands are trusted and what wattage I should be looking for. Thanks for the help. :D

For a 7700k and 1070 I'd say a 600W PSU will be more than fine, you don't really need anything more.

Look here for a list of good brand PSU's

CPU: R7 1700 @ 3.7GHz - GPU: Asus 1080 Ti STRIX - RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4 3200MHz - MB: ASUS X370 Crosshair VI Hero - Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62 2x140mm AIO - Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD - Case: Phanteks P400s Tempered Glass - Monitor: LG - 34UM88C 34.0" 3440x1440 KEYBOARD: Leopold FC660M ISO (MX blues) & Tai Hao Cement/Lavender keycaps

GDDRx is for GPUs

I have an RM850i and it's a bit overkill for what I have. But something like an RM650x or RM750x unit wouldn't be a bad idea :).

They have 80+ Gold efficiency and are pretty silent whilst under load. (Plus they have really long warranty)

id go for either a S12II 520W or an EVGA SuperNova G3 550W. you dont need more wattage than that and those are both good quality, the G3 being the better one but the S12II much cheaper

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

As usual: the tier list.

A 550W PSU of tier 1 or 2 should be good enough. Common ones are Corsair TX550M, RM550x, EVGA Supernova G2/G3 550W, Seasonic G-550, but if other options in the tier list are available at lower price then definitely go for those. 650W ones are fine if they are available for a few dollars more.

Dont buy Kaby Lake CPU when Coffee Lake's is coming (Sept to Nov, no exact dates yet).

If you buy a K CPU then you will need a Z mobo

You cant use GDDR4 because it's only used on graphics cards as VRAM, but it's already obselete (or should I say, eliminated because it sucked).

I would upgrade your PSU, it is low quality. If it fails, it could take the rest of your parts with it. Anything from tier 1-3 in this list is good enough: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/631048-psu-tier-list-updated/ Around 500W is enough power.

Good quality of power supplied does not always translate to proper protections. Look at Aris's review of the EVGA B3; it has exceptional performance for the price yet still has a decent potential of destroying components.

To be honest things like ultra-high OCP points are good for extreme overclockers trying to get the most out of their 12v but bad for the wellbeing of your components in the case of failure. There are so many facets to PSU's that a list based only on an arbitrary "performance" descriptor can't adequately describe what would be a good choice for different people.

The S12II is no where near the same level as an EVGA G3, and should not be discribed as an alternate to the G3. It's like comparing 1st Gen i5 to a 7th Gen i7, the 1st Gen i5 was okay when it was new, now it is outdated and you should consider other, newer, better stuff (such as the Corsair CX Grey label).

The S12II is old as fuck and is quite mediocre with reference to modern standards.

The EVGA G3 on the other hands is a very new platform, and is quite good.

The Corsair CX Grey Label and Be Quiet! Pure Power 10 are good budget options, and the EVGA B3 *might be*. Seasonic S12II is not the case.

We've kinda stopped recommending it unless the person needing a PSU has an older system or a need for a really really cheap PSU where they can't buy a CX.
