I'm ? with the trend toward fewer drive mounts in cases. How will I ever fit all my drives in my next case?

http://www.lian-li.com/en/dt_portfolio/pc-d8000/ here you go a case for 20 HDD

That looks like a case that can take in 20 HDDs. Now I've seen one :D .

Looks like a NAS but....it's a case. Thank you for reply.

That would save you a hell of a lot of space and convenience, my friend. You can even keep old drives that have specific use-case scenarios.

TL;DR: Any chance in the next 3-5 years of standard ATX tower cases (without flashy designs, but more like Fractal Design style) being available to house lots of 3.5" drives, WITHOUT needing a server / rackmount case?  Many modern cases are trending toward too few drive bays for my use case. :(

There are a couple of possible options on the market right now.

THe best choice for you might be the Nanoxia Deep Silence 5(B) and 6.

Also Cooler Master Storm Trooper is an option.

Though you need at least one 3x5,25" to 4x 3,5" hot swap cases...

The advantage of the Cooler Master Case  is that it has only 5,25" mountings, the 3,5" mountings are done by an adaptor.

The disadvantage is the "holey" design with all that mesh next to no noise is absorbed...

I can say something about that because I own both cases mentioned here...

And they are still available...

Time to build a server!

My old machine had a small SSD along with 3 3.5in drives (2 x 500GB's and 1 x 3TB).  Even just with those, you're dealing with a lot of cables.  It worked server duty for like 2 years, and held pretty much all my media for a while before that.

My new machine has a 512 m.2 nvme SSD, and a 512 m.2 sata SSD, which should be pretty good as far as necessary local storage.

My server currently has 2 2TB Ultrastars, and once I get the new drive cages 3d printed will have 4 of them in raid 5 (for 6TB of total storage).  I was originally planning to run a 10 gigabit link between my new machine and my server, but wasn't able to fit/use the NIC so I'm choked to only the gigabit link.

Build a cheap server with all of your drives, and whatever raid implementation you feel like.  I can guarantee you don't need high speed access to every single file on every one of those drives, so just access it over the network when you need it, or copy it to a working drive on your main machine when you want to work on it.  If you get a 10 gigabit link set up, you'll be able to access the data at speeds faster than SATA is capable of.

SFF-ish:  Ryzen 5 1600X, Asrock AB350M Pro4, 16GB Corsair LPX 3200, Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro -75mV, 512gb Plextor Nvme m.2, 512gb Sandisk SATA m.2, Cryorig H7, stuffed into an Inwin 301 with rgb front panel mod.  LG27UD58.

Aging Workhorse:  Phenom II X6 1090T Black (4GHz #Yolo), 16GB Corsair XMS 1333, RX 470 Red Devil 4gb (Sold for $330 to Cryptominers), HD6850 1gb, Hilariously overkill Asus Crosshair V, 240gb Sandisk SSD Plus, 4TB's worth of mechanical drives, and a bunch of water/glycol.  Coming soon:  Bykski CPU block, whatever cheap Polaris 10 GPU I can get once miners start unloading them.

MintyFreshMedia:  Thinkserver TS130 with i3-3220, 4gb ecc ram, 120GB Toshiba/OCZ SSD booting Linux Mint XFCE, 2TB Hitachi Ultrastar.  In Progress:  3D printed drive mounts, 4 2TB ultrastars in RAID 5.

I missed the 4TB driver, regardless there clearly aren't 100TB worth of drives there... the point being, instead of using 17 hard drives you could replace them with higher capacity ones. Or have one or more dedicated storage servers.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

3 8TB, a couple of 4 and 5 TB.

He has replaced a couple of them with higher capacity ones. Though not all...

There are some that he can replace (2x 1,5TB and 1 TB, 2x 2TB) instead of 5 HDDs, it's just 1 or two. And another one for the smaller ones.

However, that costs about 200 Bucks for the drives. So it might be understandable why he doesn't want to...

Though I'd replace the fist 4 in the first line as soon as possible...

Hard drive lifespans are limited anyway, after 3-4 years you should be looking at replacing them anyway if they hold important data.

I feel your pain, OP. Your options are going to be:

- EATX or otherwise "full tower" cases (at least some)

- eBay, for all the old-school goodness being sold by enthusiast of the minimalist, fewer-bays-more-RGB trend

Depending on what you look for, newer isn't always better...
