Grandfather passed last year and was going through all his tech to see which was sellable, which was junk and which my grandmother might want to keep.

Got to a rarely used but fairly modern printer (all in one fax, scanner, the works). Scanning worked fine, so went to make a copy and paper jam. All looked fine from the front - the paper didn't even seen to move from the tray - so tried again. Still said jam. Opened up the fuser assembly and the thing was guttered and stuffed with about $10k US dollars (in Australia).

I always store my excess cash in my printer too, but I don't ever recall mentioning to him that it was a good idea for him to do it,

How happy was your Grandmother about the $2k you gave her :)

My story isn't as funky but instead, rather confusing.

A friend of mine decided it was time to upgrade his GPU from his GTX 660 as it wasn't up to snuff on the games we were playing (primarily pre 1st month patch PUBG). I gave him a couple options within his price range, primarily RX480 or GTX 1060 3GB and told him if he was willing to splurge a little that he should go for a GTX 1060 6GB. He decided on an RX 480 so I pointed him towards a GIGABYTE card. He wound up purchasing the ASUS Strix RX 480 instead, but then complained that it didn't fit in his case.

Thankfully, he bought his RX 480 just before the RX 500 series was announced. So I suggested he return the 480 he bought and buy a 580 that fits his machine for the same or maybe even less than what he originally spent. So, naturally, he bought a new case instead.

After the new case came in he asked me to help him transition everything over to the new case. I was more than happy to aid him as I enjoy playing PC surgeon!

This is where it gets confusing (if it wasn't already)... I go to take his computer apart and witnessed a couple things out of place. First of all, this machine clearly hasn't been open since it was initially built as it was caked in dust. Second, instead of his hard drive being mounted in the 3.5" rail type rack, there was a 2.5" to 3.5" converter slid into the top slot with the 3.5" HDD SHOVED in between the converter and the top of the hard drive cage... Finally, the biggest kicker was the entire time he has been using this machine the motherboard was mounted WITHOUT standoffs! How this thing didn't short I have no idea...

Now I can't blame him for these errors as he didn't originally build the machine, but I know the guy who did and I heard that when building the machine initially, he managed to break some pins on a front USB header on top of these things. I guess it's safe to say, after building your first machine or two ever, you should maybe revisit it after a year or so and give it a good look over!

TLDR: Motherboard mounted without standoffs somehow works perfectly fine after 3+ plus years. o.O

I was once cleaning malware off a friend's computer and downloaded a tool I used at the time, and I clicked on the Downloads folder and found at least 20 pornos just sitting in the folder.

This was over Teamviewer and so he let out some weird moan and rushed to delete all of it.  It was quite awkward, luckily at the time I had a high self esteem, probably too high and so I didn't care and just laughed about it.  Not the most considerate action, but I figure it was better than awkward silence.

It's got to the point now that I completely refuse to fix anybody's computer, I get held responsible if something breaks, even if they don't understand it wasn't my fault. I don't mind fixing things for people that understand a bit about computers because they'll understand if it's impossible to fix something.

i once got asked to clean up and 'revive' my boss's laptop. it was some old laptop rocking a pentium and i think 2 gigs of RAM. so yeah it was a beast to begin with.

after cleaning up some pop-ups and other addware junk i got around deleting junk files. i found this one folder and after clicking it to see if it had any junk in there i got bombarded with naked pics of my boss and his missus. but even worse, some of these pics where taken by a 3rd person!

i closed the folder, finished up cleaning the laptop and gave it back without ever mentioning seeing it, but i never quite look at my boss the same after this. quite traumatising.

I randomly found a picture (normal picture, get your mind out of the gutter!) of my former boss and his wife, on a computer that, for a start, didn't even came from the same state me and the owner live in, so bizarre.

And like i said before, i once found a rather large hentai colection, a very organized one at that, everything sorted by categories.

Also horse porn, yah, i heard stories here in the forum about people finding this sort of stuff in other people's computers and didn't believe it, so well, a few weeks ago one of these peculiar machines has found its way into my desk...

I was installing windows 7 on my PC and i needed the network drivers, so i asked my stepdad if i could borrow his laptop (he "borrowed" it. i haven't gotten it back. stereotypical scouser) and out of curiosity i looked in the firefox history and i saw a site amongst the history bollocks that read something like "guy wanks on girls boobs". no wonder he was reluctant to let me borrow his laptop, hah.

also, when i was doing my year 10 work experience, we got a computer in from a local ford garage, and malwarebytes found around 250 things, and updates hadnt been installed in months. be wary of where you spend your money, kids!

I was backing up files off an old IDE and saw some nude pictures of the person's daughter. I imagine the daughter used some kind of auto-backup and I don't think the mother ever looked in the picture folders because the mother was either fine with it or had no idea they were there. I didn't say anything because that's not what I was there for, and I don't know if anything happened later

One of my friend's relatives had her husband pass away a few years ago. His computer was password protected so my friend asked if I could come over and get in to it. They just wanted to see if he had things like photos on his computer, or other things which could be important for the family to keep.

As it turned out, he had a lot of porn on his computer. Lots and lots of Disney princesses to be more precise (although not exclusively Disney princesses).

Me and my friend saw it (since he was sitting next to me) but in the end we told the rest that he did not have anything of importance on his computer.

I think it was for the best to withhold that information. You don't want to taint their memories of the person by telling them about his secret sexual preferences.
