Has anything suprised you fixing someones PC

Well yesterday my neighbour asked me to have a look at his laptop because it just wouldnt turn on , I was on my way out at the time so I said leave it with me and Ill sort it for you , he wasnt keen on the idea but did leave it .

As soon as I got back home he rushed out to see if I was going to do it and I told him yes later but he seemed so low I said Id have a look right away so I plugged it in and nothing so next option I checked the fuse and plugged it back in again and it fired up , he snatched it up so fast he broke the screen so I asked "wtf did you do that for" and he broke down told me he was gay and that his wife didnt know and was worried Id find out when the screen came up and Id tell her !!!!

Im having a bloody strange day !

I mean.... I once found out someone tried putting a Thermaltake TR2 PSU into a friend of a friend's gaming pc....

Someone complained that there PC was slow and I found out the heatsink was being held on by 1 screw, there wasn't thermal paste, they hadn't plugged in the CPU power on the MOBO, and it was in heavy OC mode...

My Nana's PC was crawling as usual. Cleaned all the dust out with canned air and it now runs smooth as silk. When I use it. When they use it, they can't get Word to work, constantly have problems with Outlook (I despise that software), and always have their network stop working. But the point remains, cleaning computers makes a massive difference. Also, troubleshooting my own PC, it turns out the 4-pin CPU power is essential for the computer to POST. Who knew?

I was so shocked. It wasn't hidden either. He asked to take files off his pc that he didn't want and it was in a file called 'divertido ;)' which means fun in Spanish. I felt sick when I saw it. The police were so good with me talking to me about it, the uk police couldn't do enough

I made a topic about my experience with broken laptops some days ago. 4 laptops wouldn't turn on. But somehow 2 of those came back to live, 1 is probably dead and I haven't checked out the last one. Appariently the broken HDD was the problem with one of them but the PC didn't turn on at all, not even a single sign of life. So it makes no sense that the HDD was the problem. But I don't care. I'll probably get a new ssd (and replace a fan) and everything is fine again.

mostly I find stupidity that other people did before me trying to fix the computer.  I dont do it for a living so its mostly people I used to work with at my old job and family and friends.  I used to access control and security systems and emergency calls in hospitals and nursing homes.  Its awesome when you have to explain to a hospital that the reason their security isnt working right is because some employee got a virus on their computer.  Those systems are not supposed to be connected to the outside world but the IT guys always came behind us and connected them.  Most security stuff is so far behind that it will only work on windows xp and at best maybe a newer 32 bit OS, like windows vista or windows 7.  We constantly had IT guys come behind us and try and update computers from xp to windows 7 and that was pretty much the point where we had to explain that you just voided our part of the warranty and would have to take it up with the manufacturer of the system.

About 10 years ago, a coworker brought her son's desktop to me with complaints that it was so slow and infested with pop-up ads even if they weren't browsing the web. So I brought it home and booted it up without a network connection to see what was happening. Sure enough, there were pop-ups, most with broken image links since I didn't hook it up to the Internet. Great thing was his desktop was flooded with "apple bottom ebony" porn. I learned that moment what "apple bottom" meant. It is now one of my personal favorite search terms.. ya dig?

that's just it , I don't think he has got anything like that , I just think he thought it would open straight up to what he was browsing I even told him that which he looked even more disappointed by.

I haven't even told my mrs yet because she's good friends with his wife and my mrs isn't known for her discretion

My uncle did not have the internet at that time and is married.

Maybe 10 years ago my uncle asked me to come to his friend's house to remove search words that he typed in google and google saved it. He told me to remove "child porn" and another search related to sex. I was like WTF dude. :o He said it was just out of curiosity. I later told my mother about the incident but nothing happened. I believe she never told anyone about that incident.

 

A few weeks or months later:

I had my suspicion after that incident. I once checked our browsing history to see what my uncle is doing all the time at our PC when he visits us. He visited every time a dozen of porn sites and even created accounts in which he included dick size. Of course, I told my mother that too, because it is disgusting to think that someone visits porn sites on my PC in my chair. We printed out a few documents to prove our story and gave it to my aunt. My uncle said he will never use this sites again. My mother and I as well as my grandma knew that he is doing it as his own PC now because he got the internet there. They are still married to this day but got slight problems recently.

 

It is not my business now.

 

All that whole thing only because I helped him to remove things from google search.

Didn't happen to me but happened to someone I know.

 

So this dude had his HP inkjet printer sitting underneath his desk for about a year and it chugged along for quite sometime.  One day it started to make weird noises aka the ones when printers die and parts break inside.  So upon the roommates investigation of said printer he couldn't figure out what was wrong with it until he tilted it to the side a bit and well stuff came dripping out...white stuff...

I don't get these people. They know it is highly illegal so why don't they encrypt their HDD? I would never give a PC to a repair shop knowing I have highly illegal data on there which would send me to prison for a few years. Rather destroy the fucking HDD first.

Off the top of my head one of the dumbest repair related experiences I've had is when a friend asked me to do some work on his new computer. He gave his old one to his younger brother. Now he always said that his younger bother was kind of an idiot. With this in mind while waiting for his computer to re-install windows I took a look at his bothers hand-me-down PC. I opened chrome and went to the search history. Two days ago his brother was on quite the porn searching quest. Seems he was into everything. That didn't surprise me. Hormonal young kid. What did surprise me and this is where the idiocy comes in. It was chrome. Chrome has incognito mode. Not only did he not use it but he didn't clear his search history when not using it. Not the brightest kid.

I am surprised he told you that, even though you didnt see whatever he didnt want you to see on his computer.
