That is a valid concern, no doubt, but I would point you to the above.  Current system in some "manual" cars already (see some jeeps iirc) give would be terrorists a scary amount of control, including interfering with brakes, and complete control over climate control and radio which would be very disruptive.  When you also realize that these systems are (comparatively speaking) are a complete joke in terms of security, both because of how weak they are and because of the company's official responses when shown flaws, and then consider that it's not happening on a daily basis like one might expect, it paints a good picture for what the future could be when it's built by companies who know what they're doing.  While most governments and certainly some companies can be quite incompetent when it comes to tech, there are also no shortage of good ones that have a history of.having never been breached before, and these I think will be the ones developing the new.wave of self driving cars.

It is a law where after 25 years a car does not have to conform to modern standards. It is why old hot rods don't need seat belts and why skyline R32 are legal in the USA now.

 

I think the self driving feature is cool but I would still want to drive some times.

That seems like a terrible law, if you've got a classic car or something, there will come a time when it will just be an art piece unless you want to trailer it out to the middle of no where to drive manually

The law is designed to preserve old cars. And what are they going to do for the people that can't afford a new car?

Unless they will do a free trade in program and change that law they can't mandate self driving cars.

I can see ez pass Express like lanes being made for self driving only cars.

Driving and owning a car is a privilege not a right, "what about the people who can't afford new cars?" idk, what do they do currently?

 

As for mandating it, there's already rules about "what" can control a vehicle.  Currently it's a person who's passed a driving test, but they could change that at any moment to say the test is X% harder, or say that no one can drive, or say that the vehicle must control itself.

It is morally wrong. It is basically a fuck you to the poor and not well off people. The law should protect people not condemn people. They would have to have 100% fully functional self driving cars for more then 20 years before they could reasonably mandate it. I barely can see self driving feature being standard in 10 years let alone having enough adoption to all mandating it.

 

The 25 year law protects the passionate driving community.

For all we know there will be a massive shift in how driving and the car market as a whole works.  Maybe cars will be provided to anyone through tax money upon request.  Maybe no one will own them, they'll all just be shared.  There are a lot of things that could change in the near and mid future... should be interesting.

Me personally id be willing to pay thwt up charge. As an IT admin, i have zero faith in technology i cant fully control.

Hahah their cars aren't even that expensive and they are releasing a new one for around $30,000. Their nicest setup is only around $100,000. Which isn't bad considering a new pickup is around $60,000 to $80,000.

Me personally id be willing to pay thwt up charge. As an IT admin, i have zero faith in technology i cant fully control.

when those features are safety, like seatbelts, they take an additional step and become required.

 

I think you'll see it transition in slowly.  radar guided cruise control, auto breaking, etc.  There will start being more and more features, and they will transition from things that provide info to the driver to things that overrule the driver.

 

at some point once self driving is common and proven to reduce accidents by 10 or 100 or 1000 fold or whatever it becomes, it will be seen as insane and ... Im not sure what word fits best... arrogant? Evil? Careless? A little of all of it I guess... It will be seen as that to endanger others by refusing to hand over control to the computer, and at some point, it won't be up to people to make that decision, even if they're willing to pay more.

I unfortunately have to agree that thats the likely outcome over time. 

But i feel that there will be some sort of option for "manual" 

Especially with old cars and those who enjoy driving them. Mayne thatll be in the form of special licenses, extremely rigurous exams, local roads only. Who knows. 

But, at least for america, i cant see regular driving outlawed at any point in time.

afaik driving a manual is no more dangerous than an automatic.  But once cars exist that can drive themselves with 1/10th the likelihood of crashing that a human driver would have, driving manually will be looked down on the same way that texting or drinking and driving are.

I believe the likelihood of a driver crashing (at fault) to vary greatly between one another. Though I suppose we won't reach an agreement here when Least Common Denominator exists. Regrettably, what I see most often on my mountain roadsroads of other drivers does not help my case in the slightest. (ie, drivers seem incapable of holding their own lane on winding roads).

well of course but I predict that in time, and it won't be all that long, the AI in self driving cars will be able to consistently and significantly outperform any and all people.  They can see in 360° simultaneously, have reaction times as quick as the tech will allow, which is a lot better than ~200 - 250 ms for people, they can see in not just visible light but infrared, ultrasonic, radar, laser, etc. and will learn over time, even sharing the experience of one car with all cars so that the collective gains millions of hours of driving experience every day, something impossible with humans.

I wonder, to truly showcase the superiority of AI drivers to the world, what kind of an impact a self driving car would make were it to defeat professional racing drivers in a real competition?

I can't verify since I've never fact checked it myself but I've heard they've already had AI racing for some time.  In truth, it's something they should pick up really quickly.  I wouldn't be surprised at all if they could already beat human drivers.  imo, it's road driving in highly complex scenarios that's a lot more impressive, and also a lot more relevant, and thus that's the thing they should be showcasing.

I'm sure autopilot will become mandatory, just like ABS became required or certain airbags etc. So long as there is always a manual option, I'm okay with it. I enjoy driving more than anything else and I won't be impressed if they totally outlaw it.

Most crashes occur in city streets, motorways or other relatively safe, dull roads. Those are good situations for an autopilot, the king boring stretches when you don't have to pay attention.

Once you hit the twisty mountain roads, I'd want control back so I can drive the way I want to.
