Let's discuss X299 & Intel. Are they losing their minds?

I'm sure most of you have seen LTTs video on this by now, for those that haven't its here it is....

 

OK, so Intel is seemingly trying to squash the consumer platform and HEDT platform into one, right?

 

Well in that case are they dropping the consumer platform entirely or are they going to still offer it alongside X299?

 

The more you delve into this platform the more insane it becomes, consumer grade chips on a HEDT platform, boards which support features the CPUs possibly don't, multiple possibilities for RAM configurations which might end in boards that have RAM slots not working and all this when users were expecting a boost in core count at the consumer level, instead Intel deliver a reduction in core count on the high end platform.

 

Is there anything anybody can think of that makes this platform seem anything other than batshit bonkers?

 

Let's try and keep this civilised pease, I'm aware AMD & Zen is going to come into this and that's fine, Zen is certainly relevant here but let's keep this as a discussion, no need for fanboyism.

Feels bad man. I've had a soft heart on Intel, before this absolute crap. Soon AMD and other manufacturers may be able to jump in on it, but it may take some time as Intel has a huge iron fist on the market

I'm not too sure as to why they stuffed the 4 core i7s and i5s onto the platform, tbh. The 14+ core count CPUs is definitely, as Linus said, a knee jerk reaction to Threadripper.

 

X299 is starting to look like a big mess, though.

In my opinion, I think they've been caught with their pants down. They stayed dormant for way too long without pushing any massive improvements because of complacency. AMD were no where to be seen in the high end, and their FX lineup was far from stellar but still had it's place of course. It happens to most big companies, look at Microsoft. They've turned around the last few years but in the Vista era they were a shambles.

Unfortunately the X299 platform is going to be a failure from the start. Once all of the X299 CPU'S launch Intel need to regroup, get their bearings and get to work on Coffee Lake for at least two years, this would mean they would have to rejig the scheduled but I'd far rather them take two years than have a few months of development to get them out before the end of the year.

X299 doesn't seem like brand new platform, it feels more like and update to Intel's HEDT lineup than anything. To top it off, AMD just revealed their new HEDT platform, which makes the change from X99 to X299 platform seem a lot less special than previous upgrades.

Yeah, my main problem is with kaby lake x. As if the "jump" from 6700k to 7700k wasnt bad enough, not they are just going to relaunch the 6700k AGAIN, but now pretending its HEDT? Just wtf??

 

And worst, they are doing the same thing with the i5, lol. This is kind of a mess, mobo manufacturers either will have to make 2 types of x299 boards (the kaby lake x and skylake x), OR all x299 boards will be expensive as shit (as they will have to be capable to support all features), making the kaby lake x processors even more useless.

I think the i5 and i7 line is confusing, I can see a need if you want to upgrade later on without needing a new mobo. However I like the price drop in reaction to Ryzen. I see this as a good step in the right direction. I know some people are confused as I am. Intel may see low numbers on the i5 and i7 lines and abandon it after. Its simple really, just vote with your wallet and they will adjust. Reviews for the i9 line will most likely be positive and it i5 - i7 will be weird, only a small group will think that's a good upgrade path initially.

I completely agree. I feel like if they had just waited a bit and done more development on the platform, or even developed a completely new platform they would have been able to compete better and possibly jump back ahead. 

 

As if right now, it just seems as if they had butchered up their Xeon platform as a response to AMD's Threadripper just to stay relevant and as an half-@$$ed attempt to compete with AMD.

 

But it also makes me wonder about this situation. I have a dual Xeon proceessor workstation similar to Linus' $150 8 core gaming setup he posted about a year ago and it is still relevant today even with modern games. Sure there is a bottleneck on the PCI Express slot, but I was given this workstation completely free (all I needed to get was some ram and threw in an old Nvidia 560TI) and I have a Lenovo Y700 that I use while I'm not at home for everything else. 

 

After using the Xeon platform and using the i7 desktop as well as laptop platforms I'm once again leaning to building another Xeon machine whenever my current dual Xeon desktop doesn't run what I want/need to game wise. While I would love to build a 7th gen Kaby Lake desktop, after seeing what AMD has done (and continuing to develop on their current platform). If I were to consider building something it wouldn't be using anything X299.

But I have to ask, what makes you think that this wasn't Intel's plan all along?

Just release things that make no sense once you think about it.

It's not the first time Intel released products which are just like what the hell.

I can't speak for others, but the fact that they released virtually no details on the 14,16 and 18 core parts is what makes me think that this was knee-jerk.  I wouldn't use the word scared, but I'd say they were certainly caught off guard.

I'm curious why you all think this seems rushed? I think its definitely a reaction to AMD, but its not necessarily bad. More cores and a price decrease for the same amount of threads wouldn't have happened.

Because Intel was going to milk its costumers all over again making the highest possible end for the x299 only 12c/24t for abusive pricing however AMD announced their HEDT line up which goes up to 16c/32t and Intel realized they might not be able to milk every one's money this time around as it was with x99, and the only way to sell these chips is being somewhat attractive, so out of rush they included the 14c 16c and 18c variants and decreased the pricing a bit on the remaining others so AMD wouldn't be that much obvious of a better pick.

 

Quite frankly I still think Ryzen is superior thanks to the cost-to-performance than x299 and Intel should be ignored until they release Canon Lake on the new 10nm lithography.

I agree, this is why I'm looking at this as a positive. Without AMD's lineup, Intel wouldn't have released cheaper CPU's and maybe nothing larger then 10/20.
