Asus unveils 8 core ryzen notebook with RX 580 4GB GPU

Part of me is wondering if this is just supposed to be a regular FreeSync display and not FreeSync 2.0... I'd think that having the first FreeSync 2.0 display (not to mention the HDR that comes with it) would be given more attention, especially by AMD themselves.

It's good to see OEMs finally pick up AMD processors. It's been well over a decade since AMD's gotten in there with anything but entry level budget items.

The next coming months. Dell already announced some gaming desktops, Acer as well, and now gaming laptops.

So the big OEMs are starting to use it all, which is fantastic news for everyone.

I hope Threadripper and Naples appear in HP/Dell/Boxx workstations as well, and hopefully Vega Instinct and Pro make a decent appearance as well.

oh naples and threadripper certainly will as that's were AMD might make some money. as for consumer stuff that will also be massive to get, I can see why they have tookl their time to put the ryzen stuff out, as the average joe doesn't know how to fix many of the issues which comes with a new chipset etc. But that will be a big market for AMD to get into to and people will like the sounds of hexa cores and cheap quad cores

Aye, Ryzen R7 and R5 launches reminds me of my x99 launch. Lots of issues regarding memory performance and clocks.

Now that the latest Agesa update has fixed the vast majority of issues, it seems OEMs are jumping on them.

yep and when OEM machines go out then ryzen becomes mainstream and something most people can and probably will buy

It should be quite better. Remember that 7700HQ is a cut down chip, 1700 is a full on desktop chip. Mind you I would prefer a 1600X with 580 8GB 15.6''.

So, this is just a desktop cpu inside a laptop chassis? Neat, for the few that need it I guess, but I'd be a whole lot more interested if it were actually a mobile chip with lower power consumption numbers.

oh no that will be interesting as well, but the fact that a notebook can have a desktop grade 8 core in it, suggests the mobile AMD chips will have an 8 core version as well

I'm not sure if this is a mobile CPU. It stated 1700. Is the 1700 cool enough to use in a laptop? Desktop performance portable?

no it's not a mobile chip, but the fact you can fit a desktop 8 core in a notebook suggests to me that there might be a mobile chip which is an octa core and slightly lower powered

It's worth mentioning that on the ASUS product page for this it lists that it can have an 8GB RX 580 as well.

If I recall it has a clock 2.8-3.8, not sure it can run all cores at 3.8 though. So the R7 1700 sounds promising.

guessing you mean the 7700HQ cause yes that is correct

but yea the R7 1700 is a full desktop CPU so is 3.0GHz base and 3.7GHz boost with 8 cores so is so much better

I feel this is more productivity based rather than gaming. Else it could have been a R5 + 1070 for example or at least a 580 8gb

1080p display, in 99% of situations 4GB is more than enough VRAM for that.

the product page, as Masada02 pointed out says it has 8GB so one source is wrong and I hope it does have 8GB cause although yes 4GB is enough it can never hurt to have 8GB instead

I'm sure it'll be an option to get a higher tier model with 8GB of VRAM, that way people with a little less money can still afford the laptop, just with the 4GB model of the card.
