Project Treble: Google looks to improve Android update cycle

As people who have and/or use devices with Android OS can attest, Google has a notoriously bad reputation with updates to their OS. In a bid to improve this scenario, Google is introducing Project Treble, which is supposed to help modularize the Android OS and separate out the OS framework code from vendor specific hardware code.  According to Ars Technica:

"Project Treble" is a plan to modularize the Android OS, separating the OS framework code from "vendor specific" hardware code. In theory, this change would allow for a new Android update to be flashed on a device without any involvement from the silicon vendor. Google calls it "the biggest change to the low-level system architecture of Android to date," and it's already live on the Google Pixel's Android O Developer Preview.

 

This is not a magic bullet that will solve all of Android's update problems, however. After an update is released, Google lists three steps to creating an Android update:

  1. Silicon manufacturers (Qualcomm, Samsung Exynos, etc) "modify the new release for their specific hardware" and do things like make sure drivers and power management will still work.
  2. OEMs (Samsung, LG, HTC) step in and "modify the new release again as needed for their devices." This means making sure all the hardware works, rebranding Android with a custom skin, adding OEM apps, and modifying core parts of the Android OS to add special features like (before 7.0) multi-window support.
  3. Carriers add more apps, more branding, and "test and certify the new release."


Project Treble is only addressing "step 1." Google and silicon manufacturers have finally created a stable "vendor interface" that the hardware and OS can plug into, a move we've suggested implementing in the past. Just as Google has OEMs pass a "Compatibility Test Suite" (CTS) that ensures that third-party Android apps can run on their OS implementation, silicon vendors will now have a "Vendor Test Suite" (VTS) that ensures "forward compatibility of the vendor implementation." Google says that VTS-compliant vendors can "choose to deliver a new Android release to consumers by just updating the Android OS framework without any additional work required from the silicon manufacturers." For now, there aren't many details, but Google says it will release the full documentation for Treble when the final version of Android O launches later this year.

From the way that this sounds, Google would just have to provide the Android OS framework and then it would only need to pass the Vendor Test Suite prior to vendors being able to pass it out to devices.  Of course, this doesn't fix the issue of all the little stuff that vendors build on top of Android or the bloatware that carriers place on it either, but if this can take some of the Vendor work out of the equation, maybe we can see some more frequent updates over the Android update life-cycle.  Also, I still wouldn't count on vendors to push out updates for more than 2-years just so that they can try to sell you a new device.

It's time that Google catches up to Apple and even MS. How about supporting the device for longer while they're at it? Baby steps I suppose.

I'll believe it when I see it. It does sound very promising though.

But like the article says, there will still be issues relating to OEMs adding their own stuff to Android, and also carriers.

Part of the problem with supporting older devices, is that a lot of them have only 512MB of RAM, and those with 1GB of RAM have plenty of troubles with Android 6 if they aren't running stock-from-Google Android like a Nexus.

After WP 7.5 Windows started updating phones without going through the carrier. I believe it started with 7.1 or .2 they started using Zune software to update the OS.

Won't this just fragment the update process even more? What they should be doing is making the carriers and vendors submit their code to google for approval and distribution. Splitting up updates between more organizations will not help, they should be looking to consolidate the amount of updates into a central distribution system.

Google needs to take a page out of Microsoft's book here.  All updates are done via Microsoft's update server, the carrier submits its network peramiters to Microsoft and they include in the update process.

Simple, fast, efficient. The One thing MS got done right with Windows Phones.

The idea behind this is that while you may still have to suffer through vendor or carrier specific implementation of Android features, the updates to the Android OS framework is not going to require the vendor or carrier to essentially reprogram their portion for support, just run a validation test to ensure that everything is still good and then push out the update.

Also im still using fucking MIUI8 lollipop 5.1 android on my Xiaomi mi4c, for fucks sake, Nougat has been out since september 2016 and Miui9 nougat is nowhere in sight, there are custom Nougat Rom's for mi4c and most devices out there yet a company with billions of $ income cant put out a fucking nougat rom update already, fucking slackers.

I hope this Project Treble goes somewhere.

No, reread the article. This does not split up updates between more organizations, and having a centralized distribution system would never work for Android.

It works for the iPhone because there are like 4 models actively being updated. It worked for Windows Phone because barely any devices used it, Microsoft just completely dropped support from time to time and they were very slow with new updates. Could you imagine putting the responsibility of checking every single modification for thousands of devices on a single company? It would make the yearly Android release screech to a halt. Welcome to a new Android version each 5 years instead of 1 year!

 

Seriously, there are something like 30,000 different devices running Android. Let's assume that each device would require an average of 1 weeks to program and validate (it is way more, but let's assume the OEMs would help out), and that each device will get 2 updates in their lifespan.

Google would need to spend 1150 years just to validate the updates.

That should give you a clue about why doing it in a centralized way is ridiculously unfeasible.

 

 

This is one step towards making the entire architecture better, by decoupling the chipset specific code from the Android OS.

This is pretty much the reason it sucks the way it does.   MS and Apple have it sorted (MS because they only have a small number of vendors to work with and apple because they only have their own hardware).   As for the telcos and manufacturers all doing their damnedest to make it harder to go around them.

Only the Nokia Lumia 810, Huawei devices, Samsung Ativ S Neo and the HTC 8S didn't get WP8.1, I believe.

Nokia had their own specific firmware, which added in Nokia-exclusive features to try to fix the shortcomings of the Windows Phone platforms. So yes, that did cause some fragmentation, but not a whole lot because Nokia dominated the Windows Phone space.

 

OT: I'm excited for this. It's a step in the right direction for fixing the sluggishness of Android updates. Oh, and good luck to Google with getting Qualcomm on board; they'll need it.

Devices with less than 2GB RAM I believe dates back to 2013. I don't think anyone even uses those phones given how android devices age very badly. What they should do, at least for time being is update all phones from 2015 to Android O, which in it's itself is a long shot
