Microsoft announces the Surface Laptop - aimed at students

GoodBytes

Windows 10 Cloud is WIndows 10 S.

I was ready to buy a new laptop when the 2016 MacBook Pro was launched but aside from the measly hardware configurations, I was greatly disappointed of them taking away one of the best features of MacBooks, the "Mag Safe charging port".

I agree that Windows 10S should be for IT departments and companies who deploy laptops to their employees. I think Microsoft is once again fragmenting its own platform by shipping way too many versions of Windows. So if there's a redacted version called Windows 10S, what will happen to Windows 10 Cloud which was rumored to compete with Google's Chrome OS? I don't want to hate on a company just for the sake of hating but lately, I realized that Windows 10 is slowly becoming like Windows Vista.

I mean, why can't they just stick to three?

Still inappropriate in my opinion for a $1000 laptop. It's a dirt magnet especially at a university. They should've used a material that's easier to clean. Also a $1000 laptop without Thunderbolt 3 but instead the older mini display port?

Windows 10 Cloud is Windows 10 S.

I stand corrected then. But I still stand to what I said before that Microsoft is fragmenting its own platform and bears one of the many gripes people had with Windows Vista before.

Windows 10S is Windows Cloud.

Windows Cloud was just a rumored name.

By the way, if you want to add more editions to the list then:

Windows 10 S

Windows 10 Education

I actually hate how companies like Apple and Microsoft aim products like the Macbook and the Surface line at students. I live in Scotland and even with student loans I can barely afford the accommodation and my tuition is free. The Tuition in England and Wales is £9000 a year and meant to rise soon. How is a $1000 laptop aimed at students already £25000+ in debt?

So did some further reading from the FAQ's and other info they've put out on Windows 10 S.

Two things I'm now wondering - driver support & Windows 10 Education.

Microsoft have stated that there is basic support for most peripherals however that they're working with partners to develop solutions for 3rd party applications. Based on that alone, deploying this is going to be an enormous task purely for testing compatibility.

Secondly - Windows 10 Education already exists but they release S aimed at that same market? The only two things  I see that are notably different are the lack of on premise domain support through Windows S and the obvious applications limitation.

Seems I was right in that the OS is designed to be bundled as a part of Office 365/InTune/Azure. Surprised to be honest the OS isn't licensed under a SaaS model like most other products are these days.

I don't think an extra $300-$500 is going to push you over the edge if you're looking at $30,000 of debt.

There is a free upgrade to Pro until Dec 31st, then it will cost $50.

This laptop is indeed a compelling one for college students but here are some quirks that Microsoft could have addressed:

  • I appreciate the inclusion of type A USB port but they could've included a single Thunderbolt 3 via USB type C port to enable external GPUs for more graphics power and the Surface Dock should add more than just type A USB ports.

Now that I am thinking about it. I have a feeling that they'll add it, at least USB Type-C, in the Surface Pro 5 and Surface Book 2 to differentiate it more than the Surface Laptop.

  • A 720p front facing camera? They could've edged out Apple on that one.

Yea, it is silly for the price of the system. It does have Windows Hello however camera.

How much would it cost a college student on debt to change Windows 10S to Pro? I don't think it will hurt if they have put the Home version instead of the highly redacted S. The Windows Store is growing but is still abysmal. So if it can only run UWP and x86/64 apps from the Windows Store, then would it really be a compelling sell to a student who wants to use Adobe Creative Cloud and would want to use other browsers? I don't think so.

The hardware design is beautiful but I think college students are better off with the Surface Pro 4 or the upcoming Surface Pro 5.

Windows 10 Pro upgrade is free until Dec 31st. Then it will be $49.

It's good that Microsoft is bundling one year of Office 365 for free with every Surface laptop, they should realize that Office isn't the only thing college students use.

Can't find a single a single known coding IDE. Visual studio itself isn't supported in UWP, which is kinda funny.

IT students will have to code in notepad. Or even better - on paper.

Look at the spoilers I quoted.

When searching for AutoCAD, Chrome and some other programs you get a bunch of manuals and guides for the programs.

Does Notepad work? It's not an UWP program.

I'm not advocating for the felt, but I also don't want plastic -- metal is what should be used on a $1000 laptop.

If they're really targeting college students especially the ones struggling financially, they should've used non-premium materials like polycarbonate plastic to bring the price down at around $600 to $750. You and I may not like a plastic laptop but someone else will.

But that's not their target market. They're aiming for the high end market, people looking for budget laptops can get something else. Also, lets be realistic, someone who is spending tens of thousands of dollars on college isn't going to be affected by the extra $250-$400.

Engineering students, and IT related students are all in school departments that are joined to Microsoft MSDNAA/Dreamspark Premium/Imagine. Meaning, they have Windows 10, Visual Studio, and just about all Microsoft software available for free to download. They can download it, and install/upgrade and get Visual Studio.

I think they should've clarified their press materials then that the Surface laptop is for college students with a little deeper pockets. xD

But with the free upgrade to Pro, it might be a worth spending (and saving money) since it's a laptop made by Microsoft, it will be free of OEM crapware unlike some other laptops (like Dell).

Interest for Windows 10 is building.

Interest for UWP, not so much (at least I hope not, because I don't want that cancer to spread).

In other news, you can not change the default browser nor search engine on Windows 10S. No, you can't even change the search engine in Edge.

Maybe that should be its own thread since this thread is about the laptop...
