Apple Being Counter-Sued by Qualcomm Over iPhone 7 Performance Hindrance

Link: https://www.theverge.com/2017/4/11/15255318/qualcomm-sues-apple-iphone-countersue-intel

I already didn't like Apple, this just makes it worse.

In January of this year, Apple filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm. They claimed that Qualcomm was charging Apple too much to use their patents. This past Monday (4/10/17), Qualcomm filed a counter-suit against Apple which stated that Apple was hindering performance on Qualcomm chipset-equipped iPhone 7's. They also claim that Apple "threatened" them into keeping thier mouths shut about the superior performance of their Qualcomm iPhone 7's versus the Intel-equipped models.

Quote

Qualcomm says that Apple “chose not to utilize certain high-performance features of the Qualcomm chipsets for the iPhone 7 (preventing consumers from enjoying the full extent of Qualcomm’s innovation),” and when Qualcomm iPhones supposedly outperformed Intel iPhones, “Apple falsely claimed that there was ‘no discernible difference’ between” the two variants...
...Other complaints in the countersuit include claims that Apple breached and mischaracterized agreements and negotiations with Qualcomm, encouraged attacks on the company in a number of markets by misrepresenting facts and making false statements, and interfered with Qualcomm’s existing agreements with other companies.

Depending on how it plays out, it's possible that Apple could put out an OTA update for Qualcomm-equipped iPhones that could unlock extra performance for some lucky users.

Anyone else have thoughts on how this might play out?

It's a shame you think Apple is worse than Qualcomm. Qualcomm is pretty scummy when it comes to their patents.

Yeah, I'm with Apple on this one... Sorry.

According to the South Korean, and UK investigations & Apple's lawsuit:

  • Qualcomm withheld $1b in rebates for participating in a South Korean investigation
  • Qualcomm charge royalties based on the sale price of the device, not the contribution of the Qualcomm components which is only enforceable because of their monopoly.
  • Apple can't buy chipsets from other manufacturers, because even the chipsets they buy from Intel include royalty payments to Qualcomm based on the sale value of the iPhone.

So if a $200,000 car had a 4G capable computer in the vehicle Qualcomm would collect royalties on the $200,000 car, not the $20 chipset that is embedded into the computer.

That's messed up. I didn't realize they were all that corrupt.

That's Foxconn which makes the Qualcomm iPhones. Doesn't make Qualcomm any less scummy though.

I don't want Qualcomm to set a perecedence here, what their doing looks pretty scummy and they need to stop.

Company that always charges everyone too much, complaining about Qualcom charging them too much.

The hypocrisy

My thoughts exactly, Apple charges hundreds of dollars for a RAM upgrade .

This is going a little off topic here but recently everyone has been complaining about Microsoft advertising One Drive in Windows explorer and yet Aple has had almost identical ads baked into Finder for iCloud for years and no one ever said a word.

The double standards employed by tech users is huge.

Apple charges you X amount for  X RAM upgrade. X amount doesn't change.

Qualcomm chargers the amount based on the sale price, so regardless of the fact that the modem is the same the price increases as the product price increases.

Explain to me how is that the same.

Does it advertise deals for one drive storage as Microsoft does or does just say "iCloud"?

Apple is ripping off its paying customers. (Also not my problem because I've never bought an Apple product in my life and I don't intend on starting now)

Its identical, if your not signed in it advertises the service, if your signed it it goes away then once you use up your 5GB it starts advertising upgrades to you. Sure its not as big and is text only but its in the same place and does the same thing.

the only reason they don't is because their production line is too advanced for low wage workers, but ask them where they get their materials from and you will find childslaves and systematic rape in their supply line which they don't give a single shit about. every company is unethical because all of them care only about money, not humans. some just practice this more than others because of public backlash. as long as we don't stand up to company's and say we won't create demand for a product like that they will continue to create it. that also is why company's try to hide horrible shit like that, its cheaper to hide it than to treat your workers well.

If Qualcomm are ripping off other companies, those higher costs will be passed on the consumers. Higher costs that are much harder to avoid than the substantial Apple markup.
