Did it irk anyone else that Linus tried to use an Arduino Uno for the RGB chair?

Acorn Eyes

Unbelievable that he was going to spend more money than he had to with a bulkier setup than with something like an Adafruit Feather.

Micro controllers, useful on DIY projects as you can program and wire sensors and actuators fairly simply.

The Arduino Uno is a very well known product in the tech sphere. The Adafruit Feather - not so much. In fact, this is the first time I've heard of it. Sure, DIY PLC enthusiasts would know about it, but by using the Uni, Linus can ensure that a more widespread audience will know what he's using.

It's also readily available, and still pretty cheap.

You're obviously supposed to take the general concept he shows, and tailor it to your needs. If that means buying a Feather instead? Sure, whatever. No problem.

It doesn't matter at all. The uno is a good board that's really good at what it tries to do.

I think we are missing the real point here, why the fuck did the chair need to be made in the first place. Seriously, has the RGB thing not been beaten to death already? Why does everything need to be RGB, just pick a fucking color or no color and stick with that!

Uno uses Atmega 328 series microcontroler, Feather 32u4 (same as Leonardo). In the end the result would be the same because they are almost identical microcontrollers (not exactly but for this project they are. Also 32u4 has integrated USB controller). If someone wants to replicate the project, feather is smaller and more convenient for the permanent installation. He could also use ESP8266 and have integrated wifi for remote control. Code wise for this project, they are the same (except ESP8266 where you would have to add web server code and wifi code but the core code should be the same).
Long story short, lots of the LTT audience have no experience and knowledge with electronics so Linus just used the most popular platform and they are not aware about substitutions. And of course there are lot more substitutions than what I've written here.

My bad that looks like an even better alternative. Especially considering he's just driving some LED strips.

Because why not?

Also because there's a market for this stupid crap ("this stupid crap" being RGB products in general).

In all seriousness, this project is actually a good one to start with for tinkerers. It's not too complicated, the results are quite visible, and you get to work with many aspects of embedded systems that are essentially foundations. You could use what you learn here to build up other projects.

Any time I get my hands on an embedded project board, the first thing I do is get the LED to blink. It's the most simple thing in the world, but, and I'm making an assumption about you, you have no idea how satisfying it is when you can control that one LED.

I don't mind the RGB chair to be honest. Is it dumb? Yes. Is it innovative? I guess. Is it a cool project? Yes. Hell, I have an RGB strip inlaid at the hospital for walking around at night. I could see this making finding a chair not difficult in the darkness.

That last sentence was half-joke, half-true.
