are AMD Fx processors obsolete?

They are still perfectly usable chips but from the buying brand new point of view yes they are obsolete.

G4560 is superior in basically every way.

obsolete since 2011 but a bargain if you want it for non gaming purposes. Iv had a 8120 since around 2012 and I have had no need to upgrade as it compiles software super fast and can run lots of virtual machines

if the 7700K doesn't provide the performance linus needs for his computer, that doesn't mean that the 7700K is obsolete. only that it's not enough performance for linus.

 

Obsolete, in my definition, is something that is not worth buying in any situation, because it is so old, and has so little performance, that there are indisputably better offerings out there for less money.

Depends on how low the price is for them and what your performance expectations are. You can get an fx cpu and mobo for less than the cheapest ryzen cpu alone, so buying ryzen stations just because they're newer isn't really required in every scenario.

 

For speed in software and responsiveness you'll gain more benefit out of adding an SSD most of the time. Going anywhere from an FX to Intel's 2xxx sandy bridge line of processors you generally find fairly decent performance for any type of use.

 

So no, FX isn't obsolete considering the price is just going down for them and they still come with Wraith coolers, adding some pretty good budget value for rendering and multi-core performance.

If you are going back to the future, you should definately get a bunch of them. Just make sure that there is a stable power supply in that timezone.

depends on the task, to answer OP question depends what you do. getting a ryzen would be much better option than a fx processor.

They are, or they are becoming, in the sense that their platform is frozen, so the list of features and hardware they are not compatible with or requires expansion cards increases over time. I wouldn't link it to Ryzen's launch, though: it doesn't matter who makes the CPU, and intel has been moving forward for a while now.

Having said that, there are many CPU families, even older, that can still perform most tasks today, and are compatible with existing software. I'd say things from the IDE-only days and earlier are definitely obsolete by now. The FX, or Sandy Bridge, or even Phenom II and Core 2 simply have a growing list of CPUs above them in terms of performance, that's all.

If only... Unfortunately, that's not the case. Certainly, it may be for most games, but OP question is about workstations.

they are not obsolete but i wouldn't pay more than 70$ for an FX-83XX for a cheap workshorse CPU...for gaming i would recommend an pentium G4560 instead.

This! There is no bad CPU or GPU just a bad price.

Maybe, but the G4560 still comes close, even though it only has 2 cores.

Brand new FX-8350 is on sale at my local Microcenter for $99 if you buy a mobo with it.  

 

I am not the expert on AMD processors, but that seems like a hell of a deal for someone building a cheap rig.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

I would say it's OK. You have to think that the used market of FX chips is pretty big by now (although used FX seem irrationally expensive compared to sandys, ivies, etc), and that most any FX 83xx will OC to 4.0GHz and beyond.

Maybe, depends on how cheap you can find a motherboard and highspeed or low cas ddr3 ram (fast ram does make a fair difference on them). the chip is only really useful for most people if you oc it, and ocing fx's 8's need good boards which are usually expensive and on par with the price of mid range intel boards.

 

As for the chip being obsolete, and coming from someone who owns the platform still. It does everything I need it to do right now, game's in 1440 ok for the most part at 60, but it's on its last legs and 6 months from now I'll probably be upgrading. I probably wont upgrade then though since gaming is the only real 'power user' task I do now and that only rarely thanks to work, and for general office work and word processing it's more than enough.

 

And upgrading to ryzen? maybe when the platform matures somewhat, dropping the c2q for the fx6100 when it launched had amd burn me once.

Still fairly decent from what i seen, few people i know still game and do stuff pretty alright on FX's, and i did notice they did well in streaming uses too.
