Hey there, so Iv always been into networking and I currently have 32 clients who I rent servers to (as a reseller) Yet I want to get into having my own physical server! So I did some research and looked for cheap equipment; I contacted someone selling a cabinet for 45.00 GBP. (specs below for all)

Secondly, I put a bid on a little starter server. I just want some advice on starting with my own cabinet..... switches, firewalls the whole 9 miles!

I have converted the loft into an office, there are full power and ethernet connections. Its fully converted; carpets, blah blah...

I should add I don't plan to wall mount the rack, it was just a 9U rack I found at a cheap price if you have suggestions for another please share.

O sorry about that, new to the forum!

Sorry, I did not see you respond.  You sometimes have to quote people so they know.

Usually a server's hardware will be tailored to the specific software it will be running.  In your case you will be buying the hardware and have to adapt it's use case after the fact.  So what are you wanting out of this box, other than the learning experience?

I asked for your location simply because of the traffic coming and going through the lines.  Will there be a lot of traffic?  If so, how will your ISP respond to it?  Do you have a decent throughput as far as internet connectivity is concerned?

I am not a server guy, so finer details will not be coming from me.  The more details you can provide to the forum, the better the chance that someone with specialized experience and knowledge will be able to direct you properly.

Well, I intend to most likely run LAMPS off of the server so that I can teach myself more PHP. Secondly, I just want to have the experience of the different components. My upload and download is decent (I have included an image of the average results I usually get.)

That server won't run much more than Windows 2003 or linux.

The rack appears too shallow for most equipment, going to be a very tight fit.

Yeah I realized, been trying to find a 12-20U server rack deep enough for switches and data servers... Any suggestions would be really helpful! <3
