There's basically nothing else to it. I tried out Tidal recently since they had that Sprint promotion thing and while I can appreciate what they were going for, the app is garbage, especially compared to Spotify. Having a moderately better reproduction of the original mix is cool, but Spotify has the superior app.

 

I see their Hi-Fi option bringing back users from Tidal, for those who want lossless format and use a streaming service anyway.

There claim to doing it is because now we can actually enjoy it because the headphone jack is gone.....I am pretty sure Hi-Fi existed many years before digital audio and I still want the data rates rather then lossless.

you can select high quality as a premium user, but I've not idea how much of a difference it actually makes

if we already have high-quality, and we're already paying monthly, how much extra would it really cost Spotify to include lossless streaming?

I think there's more to it than that. They have to look into ways to actually come out more profitable. If you look at the article they will apparently also offer other stuff with that tier.

I recommend also checking the sound properties for the output where your headphones are plugged in and make sure the quality is maxed out. Then try Spotify high quality again

interesting... this reminds me of Tidal. actually tried the trial version, and mostly listened to music that i've listened to regularly so i point out the nuances a bit better. and there is a notable audio difference (particularly less static and more soundstage), though honestly it doesn't justify the price nor the streaming load (as it ate up bandwidth relatively quickly). i don't exactly have a hi-fi setup either, but still cool i can find the differences.

Eh, I buy all my music loseless these days instead of streaming them. The only issue is here in Australia a lot of music are not purchasable in a lossless format because of copyright reasons even though in the US and UK you definitely can, you can try using VPN to access those sites such as HDTrack to purchase lossless music but Paypal or whatever credit card system they use knows you are outside of the United States and reject your purchase.

 

The only good purchasable Hi-Fi option in Australia is Zdigital.com.au which is identical to 7Digital.com but the only difference is that we Australians get much less songs than in 7Digital.com which is a UK site. It is the exact same site by the same company but why we Australians need to have a separate site with less music?!

From my personal listening experience using my UE9000's, there's little to no difference between 160 kbps and 320 kbps Vorbis. However, listening in my car you can definitely hear more atmosphere and a larger soundstage when using the higher streaming quality, especially since I've outfitted my car with aftermarket near-reference speakers and two amplifiers. Since this is all streamed using OGG/Vorbis, the quality is actually much better than MP3 at the same bitrates. It's not as good as FLAC, and definitely not as good as listening to the master studio recordings sitting in the recording booth at the studio, but it's far better than a lot of other streaming services out there.

  • ~96 kbps ~= 160 kbps MP3 -V4
  • ~160 kbps ~= 320 kbps MP3 -b 320
  • ~320 kbps ~= 968 kbps FLAC (unless you actually have [read: expensive] proper audio equipment to hear the differences)

It's great to see Spotify potentially offer a Hi-Fi service for those with the audio gear to benefit from the higher quality files, since Tidal is... not worth talking about, and neither Google Music or Apple Music offer lossless streaming at this time, that I'm aware of. However, if you haven't got the equipment to properly experience the playback of "lossless" audio files, then none of this matters.

And before anyone brings up the whole lightning to 3.5mm adapter argument, no, that does not provide better listening quality. Unpowered adapters simply adapter the form factor of the plug or port so you can hookup old headphones to it. One would need a powered adapter, also known as a powered DAC, to properly drive the impedance of the drivers in their higher end headphones, unless they were hooking the phone up to a lightning-based pre-amp of some sort.

maybe my ears are too well conditioned to shit audio

even on my desktop with m50xs I can't really tell.

Not ripping on you, but just know in the audio enthusiast world the M50X is the most overrated headphone that isn't Beats.

It is a step up from Beats and it is a good starting point for people who came from budget consumer cans but it has that stigma of "atleast it is a M50X and not beats", which is not exactly a confident endorsement. It gets good reviews from many people probably because they are only comparing it to cheap headpones they previously own or Beats. 

A lot of better alternatives for the same price or under $100. Even my lecturer for music production didn't recommend these but recommends the Senheisser HD280 which I hate lol. 

I don't read the reply to my posts anymore so don't bother.
