Sony’s internal goal was to sell one million of the headsets in its first six months, by mid-April. The company will almost certainly surpass that forecast. “You literally have people lining up outside stores when they know stock is being replenished,” said Mr. House, describing the scene in Japan, one of the largest games markets.

Mr. House said the supply of PlayStation VR headsets will improve by April. By fall, Sony expects to begin selling them in Latin America.

This is incredible news, especially since the PC VR headsets seem to have stalled. Hopefully it means VR will continue to become more mainstream.

the price of the vive and rift is high, but the true price is the computer, the psvr sells so well because its only 400 on top of the ps4 you probably already have, meaning instead of needing a $1500 computer you can use your ps4

that also means the games coming out for psvr will likely be more "neat experience" instead of lasting games that can drive a market.

 

i just don't see how a ps4 can handle high framerates and resolution AND compelling game experience.

Getting one myself since i can use it with my friend's PS4 Pro and my PC since the price is pretty affordable and the spec is not terribly bad.

The barrier to entry is too damn high for PC. To start, you need a beefy PC (so ~$1K), then you need more money for the VR headset (another ~$1K). THEN you need the actual space to play the VR without running into walls/furniture.

 

Even if you don't already own a PS4, the total cost for system+VR is still cheaper than an entry level VR PC. Plus is easier for anyone to go out and buy a PS4+VR instead of building a VR ready PC.

What does graphical horsepower have to do with compelling game experience?

 

We have a PSVR at work, along with a Vive. Yes, the Vive is better visually and performance wise. But most VR games use relatively simple graphics, compared to AAA games. Many of the titles on Vive could easily be ported to PSVR.

 

You don't need 4K photo-realistic graphics to make a game compelling. Take Job Simulator, for example. You could run that on a turd, yet it's one of the most popular and enjoyable VR titles.

 

We definitely need developers to push better quality graphics too, but that's going to happen more in Generation 2 of VR - Think about the mainstream possibilities if XBOX Project Scorpio comes out with a VR headset comparable in price to PSVR - Scorpio was being designed around a 6 TFLOPS powered GPU - that's roughly a slightly overclocked GTX 1070. That's more than enough horsepower to give kickass VR performance. Plus whatever "PS5" Sony comes out with.

I don't think so. You can't use 3d as a huge development advantage. If you haven't tried VR yet I can understand this perspective. Once you try it once, it truly is something amazing. It's not like -oh neat! (like 3d was). It's more like you forget the world exists because you just entered another one. VR has true potential in entertainment, development, and even in the medical industry. In my opinion nowhere near a gimmick.

You need to use a different camera though, as the PS4 camera doesn't have a USB plug. The article mentions PS3 camera as one possible option.

How is it a gimmick?

 

It makes any cockpit game 1000% better, makes a lot of puzzle/exploration games more interactive, provides a twist and cool perspective to some top down strategy game...etc

 

Yeah games that require you to move, especially by point and click movement, are bull shit and dont make any sense right now. But VR is not a gimmick and shouldnt be compared to 3D monitors, motion controls and wearables.

Let me try to make clear what i think:

i'm not saying graphical horsepower has anything to do with a compelling game experience (though it does help), and i'm not saying Job Simulator isn't a fun game. What i'm saying is the games in PSVR, because of technical limitations, will all fall within this "fun, neat, interesting concept" kinds of games...

at least sound to me, since i have not tried it, only tried the vive.

 

and while having these little quirky games are fun, i don't think these are the types of games that people pour hundreds to thousands of hours on, the skyrims and the witchers and the world of warcraft types of games - i think those games will come for the vive, eventually, and that is what will make that platform explode, and i don't see the PSVR having the horsepower to host such games.

 

i could be totally wrong, but its what i think.

Despite the vive having sold just shy of half a million I sometimes wonder if it has even sold a thousand, alot of games are dead because no one is online to play it with.

Yeah. It has a ton of improvements to be made. Following Gabe's plan for VR, I have a lot of hope for it. He even believes that VR will have higher res displays and refresh rates than any monitors on the market. 

 

In regards to your first comment, I agree but there are some that are plenty active. For example, Rec Room always has a ton on. Pavlov just released and in the first hour it had about 100 concurrent players and it was just an early access game. (its actually really fucking fun too).

Nah. PSVR is so limited IMO. I'm a partner with Sony, but I still prefer to develop for the Vive and Oculus. Mostly because my vr philosophy is to use as much roomscale as possible to maximize immersion. PSVR has practically no room for any sort of roomscale.

Closer to an RX 480 hitting it's boost clock of 1266MHz - 5.8TFLOPs. At stock settings, the 1070 can hit 6.5.

It's enough to drive VR acceptably, in most of today's titles, but PC VR is actually pretty demanding for how simplistic the graphics are. A resolution of 1080x1200 x2 (2160x1200), @ 90hz to try to avoid some motion sickness, while needing to render an image twice, from two slightly different perspectives, isn't exactly a walk in the park for entry level VR GPUs. Big reason the PS4 can do it at all is because the panel is dropped to 1080p, and the few decently performing games are pretty well optimized to do it.
