Surface Book or Macbook or Macbook Pro?

Hey guys I was stuck between picking one of 3 laptops & was wondering if you guys can give me a little information as to what to go for depending on what I do with it.

I am a medical student in 2nd year & mostly spend my time:

 

1) studying on the laptop

2) browsing/surfing the web

3) watching shows/movies

4) skype-ing with friends

 

  • Looking for something that will last forever and stay as good when bought after 5-10years of use if possible.
  • Currency will be in CAD [Canadian dollar] if that makes any difference.

 

A) Which would would you go for between the surface book / macbook 12" / macbook pro for the 4 things I do with my laptop & why?

B) Which upgrade would you get for it? Do you think I should spend more for a certain upgrade & why?

C) Should I buy a bestbuy warranty or applecare for it & why?

a. mac because you are a medical student and there is no point for you to need anything more powerful: also it looks more professional

b. what do you mean upgrades? there is barely any upgradability for macs. also you are a medical student so you would not need anything more powerful.

c. if you are careful, then no. if you are not, then yes.

 

do medical students use CD's? if so, buy a cd drive.

Should I try to buy anything used?

When I was doing some research about these laptops .... One thing that scared me a bit was the 1000 battery cycle count.  Reason is, with these newer macs the battery apparently is heavily connected to the other parts and replacing it costs around $269 CAD just for a battery replacement & I use my laptop quite a bit.

Just keeping this here as a i would get the surface book. the macbook is a little weak because of the core m processor and it throttles. the macbook pro seems to have a lot of problems though i heard some are fixed but i would still be a bit iffy on getting one and i like how the surface book can be used as a tablet

for med school you should be able to use a chrome book. cheap. good battery life. get a 4GB RAM model. for the price of a macbook you can buy a new chrome book every year for 10 years

I was thinking about this one but the reason I didn't think about it later is because of the text clarity with the higher resolutions that all the other laptops have these days.

 

Less strain on my eyes from constant text reads on the laptop.

It really wont matter, if you are straining your eyes get glasses. My 21.5" 1080p monitor has probably equal ppi to the Air

A-lot of people told me that movies and shows look amazing on the newer higher res laptop displays.

Something called "retina display" & more powerful other things on the newer surface book with 3000x2000 & macbook's with 2800 x something i think.

isnt the resolution like 900p? there is no excuse for that subpar resolution. with a laptop you get closer to the screen than you are with a desktop monitor and that makes sense because laptop monitors are smaller

Yes they have higher resolutions, but once you start working on anything that kinda falls away out of your mind. The MacBook Air is Apples best value laptop right now. If not then get the 2015 MacBook Pro. That has the retina display and ports and is better than the surface imo.

Movies look great on high resolution displays. Either get a Retina MBP or a Surface Book.

B) Which upgrade would you get for it? Do you think I should spend more for a certain upgrade & why?

C) Should I buy a bestbuy warranty or applecare for it & why?

Not really. The newest TouchBar ones yes but the 13" Pros are pretty cheap. Especially the non touchbar model.

    the MBP has a powerful enough GPU for viewing stuff on it's 2560x1600 display.

 

Surface Book with the Performance Base would be optimal but it's ridiculously expensive.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Thats it though, it can only exist at that resolution. Through some graphics at it and no notebook will be able to output that res.

The battery exchange on the retina mbp is what hurt's my wallet.

Apple asking $269 CAD for a replacement since it's harder to replace battery in these mbp since they are connected to the other components apparently.
