Actually crying of laughter at my friend

I don't understand how that even happens. How do you pull out an AMD CPU from its socket without touching the lever? How was it even functioning if it was put in as-is?

Never underestimate people's abilities to do dumb things.

umm

this actually happens quite a lot with older systems where the thermal compound has dried up to the point it has become like really sticky. It's not uncommon to see this with 939/AM2 motherboards.

I mean, once the paste sets on a cooler, said cooler will happily tear the AMD chips away from the rest of their family unless you wiggle the shit out of the cooler.

So my friend replaced his CPU cooler today. First time he has done this, prior to this he had added a new gpu.

Was telling him how to remove thermal paste, "There's no paste on it" so i asked him to take photos.

I'm really curious if that cpu is still functional (I bet it is). Please give us an update once you find out.

His system is quite old and it didn't take much to pull the cpu out without doing the lever.

We've fixed it all now, but unfortunately have to remove motherboard to do backplate.

It will come out. I had a CPU stuck to a particularly bulky, hard to manipulate heatsink once. It ended with the CPU coming off with the cooler, lever still in place. No harm to CPU or motherboard, though. Not sure whether I would repeat or try more wiggle next time, though. While simply pulling it off can break stuff, wiggling a strongly attached cooler around could led to bent pins (remember that it's stuck hard enough you can pull it off without releasing the lever).

I was reading, people recommend having it on and heating the cpu up a bit so the thermal paste is softer then wiggle.

Also it has never been removed before in the many, many, many years he has had it. Will check mobbo name in a bit. So it was the basic compound amd use.
