Say what you want lol, as long as AMD prices their CPUs reasonably Intel will be forced to drop prices or even cut entire product lines (e.g. enable hyper threading on i5s, make i3s full 4 cores etc.)

I would go with the 6700K if you want current or 4790K if you have some DDR3 lying around (be warned that Z97 boards are going for a lot of cash).

we need to know the use-case.... you may not need the power of an i7, your specific workload may prefer a xeon instead as well. does this budget also include the motherboard and RAM you're going to need? or just the CPU?

best gaming CPU on the market today is an i7 6700k and it should be very capable of doing any of those other tasks quite well. You may wish to consider waiting a few days and seeing if Intel sets a release date for Kaby Lake sometime during CES here.... with it so close around the corner, the 7700k will dethrone the 6700k as the "best gaming CPU" so if the build isn't time sensitive, I would recommend waiting for Kaby

We have no unbiased benchmarks to go off of and your numbers are pretty extreme and unrealistic.

Where are you located?

There are a lot of countries that use dollars, and it'll greatly affect what we suggest ;)

I'd just go with a 6700k. Best gaming performance, still does exceedingly well at the other stuff.

There are very few use cases in which a Xeon performs better than an i7. Chances are if they're on this forum, they don't need a Xeon.

You assume that AMD will price it incredibly low, which they likely won't. It doesn't make sense. If people are already used to paying the Intel pricing, then they can price right up against it and have a higher margin. Which would be much smarter from a business standpoint.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the math, but what makes you think AMD is going to drop their prices by THAT MUCH if it can directly compete with intel? AMD will put their pricepoint right around what intel currently charges in order to make the most money they can. They are not in business in order to make intel CPU's more affordable for everyone else. They are in business to make money. a 50% cut doesn't make them much money

Don't get me wrong, we will probably see some price adjustments across the board when some competition arises, but we're talking in the scope of something like $50-$100 at the high end (with the exception of maybe like the 6950x which is already egregiously overpriced), its not going to be anywhere near 50% cuts lol .

but lets try to keep this topic on point for the OP.

My recommendation would definitely be to wait and at least see if Intel plants a release date for Kaby Lake at CES. They've already said "first half of 2017", but that could be 6 months from now and you may not wish to wait that long... but it could also be 2 weeks from now, in which case it would be a very good idea to wait for the 7700k. If it were my money, I would wait and see how I feel about the happenings after CES

Let's make a bet then, if Intel doesn't change their pricing within 6 months of the Ryzen launch, I will have to make a public apology to you on the forums, if they do, you will have to make an apology to me.

that is pointless for 2 reasons...

1. The forum doesn't care about your or my existence. If we disappeared I don't think even a single person would notice. With that in mind they CERTAINLY don't care about a pissing contest between us.
2. You say that like an apology would change anything lol. I'm not attacking you personally. I'm merely saying you're incorrect.

Besides, AMD will probably undercut intel a bit and intel probably will probably adjust their prices a little bit in order to compete.... But its not going to be anywhere near 50%. Not even remotely close to that. It doesn't make any sense profit wise for AMD to do that.

But this is the last time I respond to you in this thread about your secondary topic. if you wish to consider this conversation more fully create your own thread or PM me, otherwise lets keep this topic on point about the advice the OP needs.

If AMD price right up against Intel, they will keep their 2% market share or whatever it is and the only reason to get an AMD CPU will still be fanboyism, they have to surpass intel in performance pricing if they want to grab any market share, and that will be much more business smarter.

Even if they priced it $150ish less it's still enticing for those who are more budget minded.

It definitely won't be 60% less like everyone's going on about. That makes absolutely no sense.

I'd like to think so for AMD's sake, but I think we'll see a bigger gap between the two. Intel has had the reigns for so long that it's an instant go to, in order to claw back some market share it'll have to be a bit lower to start. Then once they've proven they're back, they can up the price.
