Microsoft is working on a new Windows 10 Install/Setup experience using Cortana

If you've ever had to re-install, install or setup Windows, regardless of version, you'll know that it's never a fun experience. Microsoft wants to help make this process better by remaking the experience with Cortana in mind.

 

Instead of having to type out EVERY LITTLE DETAIL, you can simply use Voice dictation for setting up Windows 10 with their new "Out Of the Box Experience". This is not coming to official release just yet but is likely to be released in time for The Creator's Update which is scheduled to be released in March 2017. This is currently available through Insider Preview build 14977 on the Insider Fast Ring.

This news doesn't come as much of a surprise considering Microsoft's goal for Cortana is to have it compete with the likes of the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Building a Windows 10 device without a screen would be difficult to set up if there was no set up experience tailored for the voice.

 

Microsoft is also working on an improved set up UI for devices that do have screens too, with the options turning voice activation on and off, changing volume and more. We're not entirely sure if these improvements will show up in the next Insider build, but it's looking likely that it'll be ready in time for the Creators Update.

 

I think this is cool and definitely could make configuring Windows a lot less painful than it currently is.

Am I the only one in here who uses classic shell and other tweaks to have my Win10 be just like Win7 and have never lay my fingers on Cortana? Old Search box on old start menu FTW.

Isn't that a sad true? I have always found unacceptable people who pay a heavy dollar on a computer and don't explore all they can do with it to the limit, Windows 10 can be edited a lot with some patience, I managed to make my extremely simplistic and feel like an actual WinXP/7 PC before the whole "hey lets turn PCs into Smartphones" deal hahah

Initially I tried using Cortana a lot but more recently I've started using it less and less. But that's not due to hating it, rather it's due to not having great 3rd party app/program recognition or usage. Still waiting for something like "Hey Cortana, play Extreme Ways by Moby on Spotify". Also, if I had a flagship windows phone with a Snapdragon 800 or newer then I'd use it more due to hand's free capabilities.

So it's basically the same thing except now you can "say your settings"? I won't say bad things about this. It might prove to be more difficult for many users as many voice options turn out, but don't forget there are many people with different kind of disabilities. It's a nice feature and if you don't need, just ignore it.

I'd much rather be able to enter the settings i want into some file that I include in the installer, so I can just let it do its thing and go do something that isn't watch Windows install itself.

Urm, no. Voice commands are tiresome and even slow operational compared to kb&m specially for simple tasks that I will do faster anyway. Asking for weather, place directions and calculations blah blah is what would make more sense, but whatever.

They could revise install setup to be faster specially as far as updating if need on older install setup and so. Or even automatic setup update on say USB and after that is done simply go and install then. Ease of life things like such

You could just open CMD and type. Are you under the impression that they want to REPLACE your keyboard with Cortana? Not at all.

I used it quite a bit until they forced Bing. Now I basically never use it.

So instead of having to type out "every little detail", I now have the option of screaming every little detail at my computer? That sounds like a terrible idea.

 

There is only one scenario where I think it would be easier to say something instead of typing it, and that's your WiFi password. If you haven't changed it (most people don't), and have to look at the sticker under the router which is probably in another room, then just reading the password out loud will be easier than taking a photo of it, and then type it in. But that's assuming that:
1) You want to shout your WiFi password out.

2) Cortana will accurately be able to interpret the random letters which can be upper or lowercase that you shout at it from another room.

NO GOD PLEASE NO.  I don't want my computer tracking everything I say, let alone tracking me during the install process.  Might be the final nail in the coffin for Windows for me.
