  1. 1. Will usb c replace standard usb as the most commonly used conector?

All the contraversy over the new Macbook pro's exclusive use of usb type c connectors reminds me of similar contraversies over the move from ps2 to usb (yes, I know this is not a perfect comparison). Is apple right? Are keyboards, mice, and other gadgets going to start shiping more freqently than not with type c conectors? If so, how long do you think this will take?

All new electronics expect the super cheap stuff already come with it.

Once this Gen of hardware trickles out it will be standard on next gen products in 2017

So it will.

Im just waiting for the day where USB C will take every port over. USB ports, DP/HDMI, Audio, etc.

Probably, yes. If not that, then something. Something's got to replace USB.

Not anytime soon, though.

it might, but that depends on how you define replacing. replacing as in being the only usb standard on the market or replacing usb A & B as the standard connector?

Essentially will it go the way of ps2?

If it's poised to completely replace USB Type A/B ports, then it'll take many years. It took USB pretty much a decade to finally axe legacy ports from most consumer parts.

I mean heck, USB 3.0 hasn't completely phased out USB 2.0, considering it's not that hard to find a motherboard with them either on the back panel or with headers for the front panel.

Well, PS/2 is still around on a lot of consumer motherboards and server equipment.

My point exactly. It's not like ps2 is gone, but you will never see it on a laptop again.

The thing with PS/2 though is that it does not require drivers to run. As long as it's plugged in when the system POSTs, it's guaranteed to work (provided nothing is broken on either end).

Apple uses USB keyboard / mouse in their MAC Books

the rest of the industry mostly still use the PS/2 interface

I used to use a ps2 keyboard all the time but my brother thought it was funny to constantly unplug it so I'd have to restart my system. I'm glad it's still around but it brings back bad memories in this regard ;)

Yeah, but it will be several years. There are just so many devices out in the world with A/B connectors or use other video ports. It is more convenient to have one port for everything, But it is still too new and most things don't support it. At the high end we see things years before it becomes common place.

Well how I see it is that so far most type C connectors have been seen more on devices than PCs, yes they are on PCs, but are somewhat of a gimmick right now IMO.
Until USB type C devices actually start using the USB 3.1 standard to go with it more, then I can't see it happening anytime soon. Yes, some devices are using the capacity more, like macbooks etc and some PC mobos (mine does), but on Those things you could already use the 3.1->type C leads anyway. Where it needs advancement is on tablets/phones properly instead of this crap USB 2.0->type C that most of them have settled for right now... that's complete bullshart.

I hope it happens to be honest, I know the devices themselves need to have better flash memory to take advantage of the throughput for transferring data, but even now we have microSD cards that can write in excess of around 90MB/s, but then is hampered by lousy USB 2.0 speeds. It's gotten to the stage almost where it'd be quicker to send yourself the files wirelessly through 3g/4g etc than to plug in a cable.

But USB type C is a good way forwards I think, when it gets it sorted out properly... should get to the stage hopefully where you will only need to take USB type C cables with you no matter the device(s) and have better interoperability between those devices too.

yea, i already have usb 2.0 go the way of ps2 on my motherboard (although ps2 is still on there too). they intentionally left 2 usb 2.0 ports for mouse and keyboard which makes sense since you don't need more than that for mouse and keyboard. like from ps2 to usb was a step up because it allowed for more functionality towards the mouse such as programming it or rgb lighting and shit like that, but what's usb c going to bring to that? it just takes more bandwidth resources than needed for devices like that so i don't think they will leave untill we invent a new port for them or just use usb c on a 2.0 protocol for mouse and keyboard but that seems pretty useless to me and generally just more confusing for people to where to plug them in.

If they can ever get a proper standard going which everyone starts following maybe in 5 years. As it sits now, no.
