Is an R7 240 worth even a measly $15?

I you sold your kidney on the black market you would make 262000 $ therefore you could get a build like this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YH8NgL

I refuse to call this a hot deal because it's still an R7 240, but it is a $15 GPU after MIR. The only real use I'd have for it is pairing it with an Athlon 5350 in a HTPC to free up the LP 750 Ti that's currently in there. My real wish is for a GDDR5 GT 730 to hit that price point post-MIR, but I don't know that we're to the point of $15 GDDR5 GPUs just yet. What say you, LTT? For an HTPC that will be used to emulate old-school video games and watch media files/YouTube videos, is a $15 240 worth biting on? Or hold out hope that a marginally more capable GDDR5 card touches the sub-$20 price point?

no, there are cheaper display adapters

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Is the 5350 IGP no good for HTPC tasks?

If you're going to sell your kidney, you might as well get something better then.

Basically, no. I've thrown 8GB of DDR3-1600 at it (the fastest RAM it supports), and 1080p video at 60Hz looks like crap. Even 30Hz doesn't look great. It's actually really disappointing.

Hopefully your kidney is worth more than $15 post-MIR.

If you were aiming for something this low you might end up bottlenecking with your cpu

How does it look awful? Is it choppy?

DDR3 vs. GDDR5 though. The GT 730 GDDR5 would be faster in practice.

That's looking at the OEM DDR3 version of the 730, which, IIRC, is basically a recycled GT 430. I have one of those 730s, too. It's not great, but it handles 1080p video playback. Try putting a game--any game against it and watch it die.

Ehh, you might get away with suitably small volumes of visuals. Don't expect modern, high end titles to run well at all even on minimum settings without some unofficial modding and config changes.
