Apple is limiting some iPhone 7 download speeds

Apple's iPhone 7 has received criticism and praise since its release due to the features it added and lost (RIP Headphone Jack)

The latest issue to come out with the phone is the download speeds on some of the phones

The latest Apple Inc. smartphones that run on Verizon Communications Inc.’s network are technically capable of downloading data faster than those from AT&T Inc. Yet in testing, the two phones perform about the same, according to researchers at Twin Prime Inc. and Cellular Insights.

 

The issue at hand is network throttling on the phones due to the fact that their many different providers and carriers offering the same product

That said, Apple is clearly valuing its own cost savings and supply chain flexibility over peak performance. Had it wanted the greatest speed and compatibility, it could have just used Qualcomm’s chip across all the models.

 

Having made the decision to use Intel modems for some phones and Qualcomm for others, analysts say, Apple was probably wise not to allow one model to have a significant advantage.

 

The reason they did so could be that if they didn't throttle on some networks it would mean a phone from provider A  was better than one from provider B

This practice could seem unfair since the phones aren't using the full potential of the services provided

On the other hand it would be "fairer" to make all the phones have the same capability across all the carriers

How did they pull that off?

Well, they iused Intel modems instead of Qualcomm's which are used in most high-end smartphones

Though Qualcomm does have superior technologies in the department, Intel simply has cheaper components which may not bode well with customers

Still, many users may not realize their iPhone is different from their friends’ iPhones. And even if they do, they may decide Apple isn’t responsible. Most consumers blame their wireless service provider when a phone doesn’t work well, Milanovic said.

 

This will be somewhat good for US carriers given the fact that all of them would have similar speeds though the caarriers

“Apple likely has some incentive to balance the performance of its iPhones across its U.S. operator partners," said Jeff Kvaal, an analyst with Instinet LLC. "It would be difficult, for example, to explain to AT&T, which remains the U.S. carrier with the most iPhone subscribers, why Verizon is offering a superior product."

"Oh shit, users might legit run out of space on the laughably small memory configs we offer, what do we do? It costs like 10 bucks on a 700 device to just get triple the memory....No fuck that, throttle the motherfuckers!"

Considering Apple has a feature called WiFi Assist that appeared after iOS 9.1 which burns through data when you're supposed to be on WiFi--I have my doubts they care about working in the customer's best interest regarding networking.

Isn't that arguably consumer-friendly on one level?  The issue isn't that it exists, it's that it may be on by default or kick in when your WiFi signal is still good.

 

Samsung and other OEMs have implemented similar features... you just don't hear about them as much.

When you deal with iPhone customers almost explicitly with data overages 10 to 1 compared flagship Android phones and the high bills that can result, it's not exactly "consumer friendly". 

 

"Why is my bill so high??"

"You bought a new iPhone..this line is using 20GB out of your 8GB plan because WiFi Assist. "

They just force us to Jailbreak IOS with all the newly added dumb limitation. 

I remember back in the early days how much we complained about not being able to add a custom ringtones with out buying them. Look hod far we good were is the end of this? Where is the "too much" line. 

 

 

Ps i know there is a trick to get custom tingtones with out jailbreaking no need to mention.

I care about wifi.  I only have a 2GB data plan.  I can't be careless about my data use.

Well then I'd recommend you turn it off in the settings.

That was one of the first things I did.  I agree it should be something you have to manually turn on but unfortunately if I remember right it was on by default.

 

Thankfully I already knew about the feature and remembered to turn it off.  While I've never gone over my data limit it's helpful for managing my usage to know that if it shows the wifi icon that I know I'm only on wifi with no cell data use.

If people here took some time to think why it's very easy to understand why Apple went with two different chipsets. If all they wanted was profit they could've easily opted for Intel chips across the board but they didn't. They probably went with two vendors to meet the demand. Apple always sources their components from multiple vendors just due to a number of components they need and it wouldn't be fair if some were faster than other

 

But with most LTT forumers, people just jump into conclusion that Apple is evil. It just takes two seconds of brain activity, but no acting dumb these days is cool

If people here took some time to think why it's very easy to understand why Apple went with two different chipsets. If all they wanted was profit they could've easily opted for Intel chips across the board but they didn't. They probably went with two vendors to meet the demand. Apple always sources their components from multiple vendors just due to a number of components they need and it wouldn't be fair if some were faster than other

 

But with most LTT forumers, people just jump into conclusion that Apple is evil. It just takes two seconds of brain activity, but no acting dumb these days is cool

I qualified my post as just a joke at their expense because of this: I actually agree with you that it makes no sense to make this an intentional limitation and thus, following the Occam's Razor principle the explanation is simple technical and/or manufacturing limitations and cost saving measures.

On a serious note, this is pretty silly.

 

Cell providers should not be given any more excuses as to not upgrade their towers. I bet Verizon isn't too happy about investing into their infrastructure only to have Apple cut their competitive advantage over AT&T.
